:iagree: Why would you want to swap out a ZF6 with a trans that won't hold up to as much HP/TQ???
Parts availability isn't an issue anymore with the ZF. It is a very high-dollar rebuild, but it is good for many years IF you change the oil once a year.
Can it be done? YES There are several obstacle to overcome. The tailhousing has to be modified to accept the C-channel. I think that a bellhousing off of a camaro would work. You would also need the clutch slave cylinder as well. The T-56 I believe has a pull type fork instead of a a push type. I don't know how well the shifter lines up with the original opening but it is something else to consider. I would like to have a T-56. You could almost sell your ZF-6 for enough to finance the entire T-56 transplant. If I do it, the T-56 will be behind a LS-1. Wish I could be more help, but I wussed out on doing the swap myself. As for why? The T-56 is just as strong in my opinion. (I'm sure others disagree, but the camaro guys run the crap outa them) It is quieter than the ZF-6 with a single mass flywheel, and they are readily available and cheap. Until recently, parts were hard to come by for the ZF-6. There's my lame opinion!!!!
Just bench racing. I have way to many other upgrades that need to be met.
I heard that they weigh a good bit less, and I know that there are 3 gearing sets to choose from. (Viper, Vette & Cobra)
I remember seeing someone Do the swap... There reasoning was cheaper to fix and parts are easier to local..... (if i remember correctly
Hes running a NASTY 93 (i think) TT Corvette with 1000hp, the thing is prolly one of the nicest setups i have ever seen. Its either ruby or dark red, with chrome Z06 rims.... I cant remember the guys name at the moment....
I do remember vaguely that the shifter comes up directly in the middle of the console... So you wont be able to use your existing console. It is def. some work to get it up there.
You'll have to midify the shifter to fit the console, in the T56 the shifter comes out in the middle and the ZF6 to the side. Ask these Q's in the C3 section cause there are a lot of guys there that swaped T56's in, and see how they modified the shifter to come out to the side like the ZF6.
The ZF6 is ridiculously heavy I noticed on a clutch change.
This will complicate your swap...I think the T56 has the gear shifter coming out of the unit, while the ZF has a rod going back and the shifter coming off of that.
What kind of weight savings are you talking about?
There are two ZF-6 trannies in C4s. The later years, 95-96? had one that was 50 lbs lighter than the earlier years. They also were quieter and won't hold as much power though they are still heavier and louder than the T-56.
Thanks for looking up the link! That is an excellent job!!!
I've bookmarked that for future reference. Every couple of months, someone asks about putting in a standard Super T10 in place of the DN 4+3; this site shows the need for the tailshaft adapter for the rear trans mount (although the Tremec is somewhat different).
