For some strange reason I bought a stage II thermomaster chip from hypertech. That plus the twisted trick flow heads are all I got (I uh... melted my old iron heads). I still have my good ol OEM thermostat. The directions say to grab a 160 thermostat, if I do will I really notice an improvement in cooling, power, or whatever its supposed to do? Since I don't have the exhaust or intake mods the chip calls for, I had every intention of going back to the oem chip once I realized my mistake... but... I uh.. lost it :(
But it will make your fans come on earlier, thats a plus. Youll need to change from the OEM 195 to a 180 or 160, in AZ id be using a 160. It will make a diff in running temps.
Don't worry about not having exhaust and other mods; just install the chip and a 160 deg stat and don't look back.
With lower engine and intake temps you should get a little more HP though you may not feel it on the street. A 30 deg F temp drop should be worth about a 3% power increase or 8-10chp.
