The ECM in my 1990 died and was replaced with a GM reman by my local Chevrolet dealer. After I picked it up the odometer read "0" miles and I am unhappy with that. The car is a reasonably low miler with 50,000 actual miles but now who will believe it?
Can it be changed from 2,000 miles back up to 52,000 miles?...the dealer says no...
no... i wasn't sure about my vette's mileage a few weeks ago and learned that if you temper with the odometer then it will show... you can replace the whole cluster to reset the odometer... but you can;t turn it forward
Well now you can drive the snot out of it for a few years and it will eventually match the registration. Then you can still sell a low miles car. :jester
On your 90, the mileage information is contained in the CCM (Central Control Module) also called the Body Module not the ECM/PCM.
If the CCM is replaced with a new GM remanufactured one, you have up to 100 miles to have the mileage reprogrammed by using a TECH 1 or one of the newer testers. After 100 miles, the mileage can not be reprogrammed. Sounds like the dealer needs to contact GM for technical assistance.
Yep....No way an ECM will cause this. It is the CCM up under the dash. Take it back and insist that they fix it or you'll notify the DMV that they are tampering with the actual mileage.

Exactly, if I'm not mistaken its a federal ofense. Tell the manager that you're gonna complaint to the DMV and they'll get it done.

*That* sounds like a sure-fire way to get ****-poor work done on your Vette...I'd hand-write to the DMV as to the situation, and get a written letter from them to take to the dealer...Then you got a paper trail if the dealer does decide to screw you...
...And if it was the ECM that died, why are they screwing around with the CCM??? No diagnostic capabilities??? I'd find a knowledgeable dealer...
I'd also check the "new" ECM to make sure it's not a junkyard cut-out...Should have a Rebuilt sticker on it with the new part number...
You are going to play tough with them and then leave them your car? Not a good idea. I had a really nice Tahoe a few years ago that came back with a few more scratches and dings than when I dropped it off after I tried that approach.

That happened once, so I got the whole car repainted, and drove the heck out of an escort for a week. :D
Thanks everyone, I took it to the dealer this afternoon and left it with them. The service advisor will have it looked at tomorrow and get in touch with GM if necessary. He seemed surprised that it was programmable and was surprised that his shop didn't know. My approach was polite and he was pleasant so perhaps all will turn out well in the end.
I will update this chain tomorrow night when I know better.
No good news today. The service rep says he contacted GM and was told that there is no odometer correction possible on my 1990's CCM. Still trying to confirm earlier advice given to me that it can be done. It's either that or I try to source a CCM with the closest mileage. I don't want "zero" miles unless absolutely necessary.
The 90 was the first year for Central Control Module and the odometer data is stored in the CCM. When getting a new/rebuilt CCM the mileage should be zero. As correctly stated, your have 100 miles to access the CCM with the proper Tech1A and appropriate Mass Storgeage Cartridge and program in the correct mileage.
Have your dealer go to page 8D8 of the 90's Factory Service manual. It mentions the Tech 1A and EEPROM.
Then, suggest they go to the Tech 1A's Mass Strorage Cartridge Users Guide, around Chapter 10, page 10-3 (may vary based on edition) Program CCM, Odometer Selection.
For the 90, if you have driven over 100 miles, they will likely have to replace the CCM and start over with 0 miles, reprogram the VATS, AND go to the appropriate menu on the Tech 1A and program the mileage.
They screwed this up when they did not program the CCM after the initial replacement. They need to contact someone who can explain the process to a technician. If they tell you the 90's CCM cannot be programed for the correct mileage prior to reaching 100 miles, they are wrong. If they say the CCM cannot be reprogrammed with 2000 miles on the odometer, they are correct. They need to do their homework.

The DMV will be no help as usual. They will simply issue a new title stating the odometer reading was changed and doesn't represent actual mileage due to mechanical problems.
dlmeyers is right on the money with his post above.
In addition, there is more than the odometer and VATS that needs programmed in with the Mass Storage Cartridge using the Tech-1A.
The option content of the vehicle is also programmed in. The CCM is actually the master computer and the others, including the ECM, are slaves. In order for the CCM to control communications between the slave computers properly, it has to know what exists.
In addition, the VIN# of the vehicle is programmed into the CCM. This VIN# can be read with a Tech-1 to see if someone changed/swapped the CCM in order to alter an odometer reading.
Also, make sure to continue to register the car with the correct mileage or it will come up as an odometer rollback on carfax which will make it more difficult to sell in the future.
