my dash is reading rpm when its not connected to the distrubitor, plus i disconnected the tach wire from the digital cluster (pin C5) and it still reads rpm?
 I fixed my problem, it was the ignition coil, "secondary voltage punch through". it caused everything to blink

well, i do want my tach to work, but it should read (0) when disconnected. i was told the dash is picking up some RF signal from the distributor, so im looking at it from that angle; maybe i have a ground in the wrong place or something ????
If it ain't broke, don't fix it !!!!!!!!
Tell me why your tach HAS to work like you think it should when the input is disconnected. GM didn't design it necessarily to read zero or anything else disconnected because they spent all their effort in making it work properly connected. What is the value of having the tach read zero when disconnected? You aren't making a bit of sense!
Some analog tach's I forget the correct name air movement or something, read something besides 0 when un plugged. But when you run power to it it goes to 0... Then again my tach is digital. But may be the same principal at work.
when the car is running it reads RPM, but with the car still running and i unplug it, it still reads RPM and i know it should go to zero. the reason that this is a problem for me is that it is effecting my A/C electronic control, it blinks. the A/C control blinks at the same frequency as the tach. i think i need to check the ground.......thanks
I have the most wonderful idea. Why don't you leave your tach connected and then it will read rpm correctly and your a/c control will also work correctly.
 well i fixed my dash problem! it was the ignition coil. the primary and secondary coils, one for the tach and one for the spark plugs.
the primary which is for the spark plugs which gets its power from the battary tap on the distributor. when it fires it produce a magantic field across the secondary coil which sends pulses to the dash tach
what happen to my coil is whats known as "secondary voltage punch through"
this happens when th secondary coil loses its ground. voltage punch through sends the pulses back through the battary which makes everything blink A/C control unit
