Default Name That Sound - Video Inside

So a while back my dad swears he's hearing this cracking noise, I listen to it and you can distinctly hear it coming from the back left. Not only that, but you can sometimes see the wheel move a little when you go back and forth. In the video you can hear the transmission shift, then when it pulls in either direction you hear a *crack/crunch/pop* kind of sound, I swear its like a U-Joint.

I took it up to my work to get it checked out and they believe its a U-joint as well, but thats a pretty expensive guess. Also when you shift easy from 1-2 it shakes sideways for a couple seconds, anything to do with it? What do you think about it?

You did the hub assembly and it fixed it?

Try the 12 & 6 o'clock check to make sure your wheel bearing are OK. If those check my guess would be a bad u-joint.

I am 95% sure it is the outer u-joint. Had a buddies do the exact same thing and the 1.5 hour swap of the u-joint fixed it up. His sounded so bad I thought is was the hub at first.

U joints cost $20 each times 2 and takes a couple of hours to swap out.

Do a search and you will find part #'s.

definately the u-joints, mine was doing the same thing. Only makes the noise on acceleration, forward and backward, but fine at idle. If the rear end seems a little loose probably a good idea to replace both of 'em ASAP but the price on parts is right, just a time consuming operation :iagree:

does it feel like the rear tires are out of balance? (you know, a shake when you get up some speed)
if so, then you may check into the air pressure sensor inside the tire...
the band on my passenger side rear broke and the stuff was just bouncing around in there... It made some pretty strange noises... I thought for sure that something was seriously broken... but when we took the tire off and rolled it, you could hear the stuff rollin around inside.... check that first... its the easiest....

yup...sounds exactly like mine as you desribed. was the outer u-joint. Very easy, jack it up and grab the half shaft and move it front and back and see how the wheel follows your movements.
