Ah, the advantages of living in a "low cost of living" area. Here in Chicago everyone wanted ~$1200 for gears and install. I ended up doing everything myself except the actual ring and pinion install, still cost me $300 parts and $200 labor.
Thanks Guys. The Dealership here in the DC area is charging $97/hr for Corvettes. Wanted $1350 just for labor!!!! Eric, how many hours do you estimate for the job?
There is only 3 - 3.5 hours of labor for the ring and pinion (w/all new internals).
If you can pull the pumpkin yourself, figure anywhere from $200 - $350 for this work , depending on their labor rates. There is another 6 hours of labor (minimum) in the disassembly and reassembly of the pumpkin. That is where you will be hit the hardest. Have some friends over and try to do that work yourself.
I would find a good driveline shop in your area and take it there. Those guys do these things for a living and will do it better than a Chevy dealership. Their labor rates will be cheaper as well.
Don't forget to get a rebuild kit (shims, bearings, etc) if you don't already have one.
When you remove or drop the camber rods, you will want to mark where the tick is on the little camber wheel and make sure they are in the same position when you put them back on. Otherwise, you will need to get the car aligned.
...Eric, how many hours do you estimate for the job?
Ha, ha, too many. When I did my gear swap it kinda grew, I did my Hurst Shifter and poly bushings at the same time, added a drain plug. Lots of swearing and tool tossing?@#%!%! If I were to do just the rear end, I estimate 3 hours to pull it and 6 hours to reinstall it. I have a Field Service manual, it has a great step by step.
edit: no special tools, but the Field Service manual shows removing the spring with some big $$ tool, the cheapy Haynes manual from Pep Boys ($12.99) shows how to do it with a floor jack.
