I am thinking of building a school project using thermoelectric generators to eliminate the need for an alternator. I was wondering if anyone has any clue how hot the exhaust pipes are on an L98. I need to know the temp so I can estimate how much electricity I can pull from them. Thanks in advance!
Re: Does anyone know what exhaust temps are? (amswak)
it would vary with load and i would guess about 400 degree F because 600 + degrees F is visable red and i have seen the exhaust manifolds get red under a hard load. see if you can borrow a IR temp detector from some one that has a race car. one of my first jobs was developing thermoelectric materials back in the 50s

An ideal mixture has an exh temp of about 1200deg's 1300 tops. Anything cooler would be considered rich anything hotter would be considered lean. These are temps taken with a EGT meter I could n't tell you what the pipe temps are but they should n't be too far off these #'s I just gave you. Good Luck!

Well, I'm used to reading a EGT gauge on my Turbo Supra. All my friends have them too. on our Turbo cars average EGT is about 1,000F. 1,200F is your crusing at 70mph...and all out racing is about 1,400F. 1,600F is where poopie happens. so 1,400 is max where you wanna be.

that is the temp of of the exhaust gas inside the exhaust manifold close to the exhaust port but since air passes by the exhaust system it is much colder on the outside.

The outside of the the headers on my car are just under 300 for cylinders 1,7,2, and 8 and about 350 for 5,7,4 and 6 at idle as measured with an I/Red thermometer. The numbers are from a 10.25:1 motor with ceramic coated headers.
If you have a car at your disposal, pick up an Infrared Thermometer, your answer is one pull of the trigger away. Plus they're kind of fun with 1001 uses, including checking the temp of the babys milk bottle!
Re: Does anyone know what exhaust temps are? (amswak)
I once measured exhaust temperature with a thermocouple inserted in the oxygen sensor port. As I recall it was about 950-1000F at moderate throttle opening. It would probably be a bit higher at higher exhaust flow. IR thermometers might not be that accurate if the outside of the headers/manifold has a low emissivity.

Yes; DAMNED HOT!!! :mad
You reckon you'd get enough amperage from that source to do that?!
I'd be looking at using the cat convertors for your project :reddevil
(Or the face of a corvette owner when he gets a typical repair bill from a mechanic!!)
