Default ZZ4 in an 84

I just came from the shop, got my billet racing pedals put in, and I saw a nasty looking 84, it had a testarossa kit molded on and a bunch of other junk. Then he cranked it up, WOW, it sounded great. He had a ZZ4 with the crossfire still on top, we talked for awhile and I found out that he didn't get a custom chip, he just took everything of his OG motor and bolted it on the ZZ4, turned the key and see ya! It passes smog to. Is this possible? I thought you had to get a chip and would have a problen getting smogged. Insight please.......

Someone chime in on the ZZ4. I thought about putting on of those in my '85 when the old L98 goes south. Can it be dropped in and the factory TPI installed on it? Do you have to modify anything (I really don't wan't to do too much of this)? I want to keep the L98 torque, so I'm not interested in deviating from the TPI. How about some feedback, my forum brothers! :D

Looking at the ZZ4 cam specs (474"/.510 208°/221° @ .050 112 LS)
it seems it would work. The ZZ4 has higher compersion and more lift then the X-fire and if he had a chip burnt for the ZZ4 he would probably see some signifigant gains.

Yes they will fit, You will have to use your old distr, Water pump. and balancer. You wont get the power that they claim with the stock tpi.

Come on guy's, I'm sure some of you guru's out there no the answer to this question. This guy who owns a corvette shop here in hawthorne, ca told me that I could buy a ZZ4 motor, put it in my car with all the stock parts from my pretty much stock 84 CFI motor, without burning a chip and it will crank up and go with no prob, plus pass smog. Now I was told that I could'nt by others. PLEASE HELP ME TO UNDERSTAND.......

It will fit in an 84. No guarantee on passing smog as the zz4 is not a smog legal motor. The heads do not have erg passages in them. Car will run with the stock chip, but the engine will not be at max capacity as the cross fire set up chokes if off, but it will run better than a stock cross fire engine. I am going to drop one into my 84.

Yeah, he's the one, scott said it. Me myself I never really delt with scott so I really don't know if he's telling the truth or not, i just went there so he could drill some holes so I could install my racing pedals. These day's people tell you anything.
