i want to put a single mass flywheel in my vette but i was told that i will lose the torgue because of the way the flywheel is balanced?? also is there a big difference as far as revving faster and accleration is it worth doing??
Going to a single mass flywheel will lighten up the reciprocating mass therefore it will rev quicker therefore make your car quicker. Downside is it takes more revs to leave the line since you have less mass ( not really that noticeable) and since the dual mass dampens the vibrations of the trans when your car is sitting with the clutch out it will be making a rattling sound. It is harmless but is unacceptable to alot of people.
Check the archives closely, a number of people have looked into this and I saw enough problems to convince me to stay with the dual mass. Problems I saw were noise related.... I have a 92 6-speed that I just replaced the wheel/pp/clutch
It's good that you've got some of the info on your radar screen. If your engine is an L98 and it's stock, then you do want to maintain the correct weighting onto a SM if going that route. The L98 is externally balanced. it needs the weights on the DM otherwise it will shake your engine apart. Well, that's being dramatic, but you get the idea. Believe me, I know as I didn't know that when switched to a SM.
Another thing was that the SM has more clutch disc options available to mate with it where the DM has less options.
Yes it rattles like a box of rocks and much more if your motor has been stroked or more CID.
Then of course is money. The DM is like waaaay more than a SM. Supposedly the DM once it is suspect, just gotta get a new one. No resurfacing it, although people have done it(me twice) as the cutting fluid used in the resurfacing machine will get into between the two masses and deterioate the dampening material inside. It is possible the internal springs will wear out or fail somehow also. Some have said the DM is concave(?) and flattening that .......blah blah....you get the pic.
Lots of info in the archives. I havre some nice pics of my retrofit Sm if need them.
I find launching at the strip a little more challenging with the SM. Also driving around town. Depends alot on the clutch disc too. You will go into a learning curve period of time. No big deal.
