Default ZZ-9 Cam & Timing

I had my base timing set to 6 Degrees but after reading on someones web sight that they have their timing set to 11 degrees I decided to do the same.
RPM's go's trough faster in all gears and pulls hard.Just wondering what everyone else is running for timming and if I should leave at 11 degrees

Do you have a TPIS chip as well? TPIS recommends leaving the timing at 6 because their level 6 PROM is programmed for that. I have the zz9, miniram, and all the other goodies plus ported stock aluminum head with 2.02 valves. I left my timing at 6 not just because of the TPIS chip but also because I have 10.25:1 compression, and I am trying to be careful not to set off the knock sensor. I just started it after the engine rebuild last night for the first time, though, so I don't have much actual experience to report on, but I'll be glad to let you know more when I take it out this weekend. By the way, how much vacuum are you pulling on your motor at idle?

I've read that you keep bumping up the timing until you you set off the knock sensor...and then back it off some.

What's the max timing on a stock Head/Cam/intake TPI motor with all the bolt-ons and exhaust mods?

depends on the year.

i think a 91 with a good tune, stock chip, and premium fuel will take 10* initial with no problems. if you have a custom chip, check with the manufacturer. they usually advance the timing to the max though and timing should be set to stock.

I have the ZZ9 with AFR heads and the super ram. a bit over 10:1 compression

I have my timming cranked up to about 10-12 degrees.

I recently got some knock when it was 103 degrees out here, so I backed it off a bit, but when cold, it loves the timming. this was with the CA 91 octane too.

I wouldn't worry too much about 10.25:1 compression TPIS say you can run up to 11:1 on premium pump gas with a zz9 cam & aluminum heads :steering:
