For those of you without a shop manual (like me) you need to know the trick...I installed a new hood shock this morning...I removed brackets, dropped a nut in the engine compartment and generally spent 1.5 hours getting aggravated...turns out on each end the shock is held on to the ball joint by a spring loaded "C" clip... there is a small depression under the clip that you insert a flathead screwdriver into and release the clip...watch out that the clip doesn't fly away on you...once each clip is off, the shock slips right off the ball joint...when installing the new shock, put the clip on about 3/4 of the way leaving just enough room for the ball joint to slide in...then push the clip the rest of the way into place which snaps the leading edges of the clip around the ball joint securing it...
The whole job takes 20 minutes once you know the above...btw, after two trips to the hardware store, I finally "jury rigged" a nut and washers on the lower bracket to replace the one I dropped... you can imagine what happened next...put the tools away, cleaned up and closed the hood...bingo !...the lost nut immediately dropped on the floor.. ...hood back up, took apart all the bracket work and installed the OEM nut... :mad ...I guess it's all's well that ends well... :D
