I like the MSD 8.5 wires. Really nice! I am using AC Delco's platinum plugs for my LT1 and have to install the MSD coil and 6AL still.

I've hurd about 9cm wires ?? I don't even know the difference between those and the normal ones.

Is Accel a good company.
I'm looking at a magazie and I see Accel Super coil wires, good for 40 000 volts. ?? this also meens nothing to me, how much is the stock voltage of a wire?

Is Hypertech a good brand for the coil?

:iagree:

I just installed the MSD Super Conductor wires. Nice quality. I also have the AC Delco Rapid fire plugs and I'm very happy with them. I'm running a new AC delco coil that I bought at the Chev dealership. Also check out the forum's
product review. Hib Halverson says some nice things about these wires.

What is 6AL?

I dont' want to sound stupid, but I don't know much about the Ignition system.

I know there is s coil, that round black thing being my plennum and I know there are spark plugs and spark plug wires.

what else is there to change for better perfomance?

Could someone explain to me a bit of the different compoants, what they do, and were they are?

Thanks!

The 6AL is the MSD 6AL unit. It is just an extra that I am adding. A lot of people use it with supercharger/turbos/nitrous/etc. I am adding it to just smooth the rev up a little and for the looks. It isn't anything necessary. I am doing it more for show. I found it at Summit Racing for $100 less than Mid America or Ecklers. Visit http://www.msdignition.com and you can read up on it. :D I figure that with the MSD 8.5mm wires and MSD coil, the MSD 6AL would look sweet. :D

My advice on your daily driver is to pick a good wire set (MSD or Taylor), a good plug (not the AC delco plats as the pucks fall off once in a while) I'm running NGK TR55IX on my LT-1 and maybe a MSD coil with a driver. I wouldn't do an ignition box (6AL), you don't need it.

For a performance engine, now that youre serious about doing real intake/cam changes, you can justify spending the money on a better ignition.

But, with a Superram, you could easily use the stock parts and be just fine. It doesnt need the hi-performance stuff like the Miniram would. It makes power where the HEI can still support it, MR can push that beyond the HEI ignition's best area.

You could put in a MSD box, if you want. You should do the MSD wires, a new coil (hypertech, MSD, all fine), new AC delco rapidfires, hypertech cap/rotor, Accel cap/rotor, etc.

I just installed MSD 8.5mm Superconductors in my Vette, as well as new Accel Cap & Rotor. I like the way they look. Can't say I see any difference in performance though.

MSD makes very good plug wires, and Crane has some new wires called FireWire that should be good also. Haven't heard how much they cost yet. The Hypertech coil is a good unit; stock coils put out about 30,000 volts where the Hypertech is supposed to be about 50,000. MSD 6 is a multi-spark unit; it fires the plug more than once, for more complete combustion. You probably don't need it. Plug choise is a matter of disagreement around here. I've used many brands, and it seems to like them all OK; even the Bosch ran well.

I agree. I put Taylor Spiro Pro's on my 90. They fit well. I pick up some wire looms at the Auto Zone and made them look neat....

I'm running Rapidfires, Moroso wires and an Accell coil...I don't see many here with Moroso's but they are doing fine for me after a year...

I'm still confused, like I said I don't know much about the Ingnision system.

I know I can put in after market wires, plugs... but thats about has far my knowledge goes.

Did any of you put in an after market Distributor? what type?
What is a coil?
What is an Ignition?

I'm looking at this MSD web site and its a bit confusing. http://www.msdignition.com/auto.htm

Any of them will work, Accel, MSD, Hypertech, Davis, but since i dont recall exact part numbers, you may want to call them directly and ask what fits the L98. Its a standard HEI system.

Its not important that you understand what each part does itself. The coil just generates spark, in simple terms. It would take too long to completely explain it in terms of physics, so order some books if you want to know more.

If i were you, going with the SR and keeping a stock cam, id just get a Hypertech coil/cap/rotor combination from Ecklers or MidAmerica or Summit, the MSD 8.5mm superconductor wires and a new set of AC Delco plugs. You dont need the other stuff.

An ignition box like the MSD digital 6 or 6AL, or others, provides even more boost to the ignition system so it doesnt fall off at high rpm. It also has a built-in rev limiter (keeps you from pushing rpms too high) and start retards (car starts better basically)

SOLD!

Thanks, I just wanted to know what parts I truly needed and I know the physic's part of it is probably behond what I want to know anyway's... I'll probably fall asleep half way reading  hahaha

I'll probably get that coil/cap/rotor combination from MidAmerica and some MSD 8.5mm superconductor wires and those AC Delco plugs.

I honnestly don't know what name brands are good out there so I'll get the ones you recommended.

Thanks Vader, its really apreciated

If you go w/what Vader advises, you are probably on the right track. He has contributed to the progress of my vette on many occasions! Vader is da man.
BTW- I have the 8.5 superconductors & the rapidfires. Accel Cap/Rotor.
