A buddy of mine purchased an 1995 Vette off ebay almost a year ago. He recently had the engine rebuilt by Nu-Tek, he now has an all forged 396.
We noticed a few wierd things. When we dropped the exhaust to pull the motor it had four O2 sensors. I also noticed that it has an OBD II (96+) plug under the dash.
Could this car really be a 1996? Is the VIN # anywhere else besides the base of the windshield? Does anyone else have a 1995 with a 96+ diagnostic port? Should a 1995 have four O2 sensors?
Thanks for any help, we are scratching our heads on this one. Gotta know if it's OBD I or II before starting to tune it.
I believe that '94 and up are OBDII. Things like speedo changes are done through programming changes rather than speedo gears on the '94 and up cars because of this difference. I think I read somewhere that the Corvette was the "guinea pig" for OBDII testing before other models such as the GM trucks, which like you said are '96 and up. There have been a number of discussions about which years are the best to mod, as OBDII cars are a bigger challenge to tune.
I believe they began installing the OBD-2 diagnostic plug in 1994; the 1995 models all had three o2 sensors, one on the left & two on the right side. I've never heard of a 95' with four o2 sensors.
BTW, the overall operating system is still OBD-1 based
