I currently have the stock temp stat in my vette. It has been running a bit warmer recently with the AC on.. Coolant can get up to the 240ish range :( I'm going to get some Water Wetter tomorrow... And was wondering what else can be done to keep my car cooler..
So could I switch to a 160 degree stat WITHOUT changing a computer chip? And I don't need to worry about the car running too hot.. I live in florida. no matter what, that temp is going to get way above the 160degrees.
If i was in FL id be running a 160 anyway. No reason not to, its never cold there.
But what you should do first blake, is to clean that area between the radiator and condensor, if youve never done it, youll see why.
That'll drop temps 10-15F, its probably clogged all to hell.
otherwise you can install a fan switch wired to the main fan, no chip required for any of this, but a chip would make the fans come on sooner if you wanted one

I've tried taking the shroud off to get inbetween the rad and the condensor before, but there was something (bolt) somewhere that I couldn't find to get the shroud off. And where can I get a 160 stat for a vette? Anywhere?
Has to be for LT1. Have any speed shops in the area. You can order them from vette catalogs or summitt and jegs. Do you have a 6 spd. If you do Slp still has a sale on chips that turn on fans sooner. Might even give performance increase but not much. You can have Ski dwn it burn you a chip also.
160 stats can be found just about ANYWHERE that sells any type of performance car part. Should run you like $15-30. I got a Powerstat (Hypertech's), it's what I used in my '97 T/A LT1 and did a great job. You have to have your car programmed for it to get its full use though, but still, no reason not to throw it in there anyway, right?
I would like to suggest a Meziere electric water pump. Thing worked wonders for my car temperature wise. It's a tad more expensive, but worth it. It's loud enough to HEAR the liquid flowing from inside the cockpit!
Vader, .... what all has to be removed to do what you were talking about? Sounds like a good idea to me.
One other suggestion, Jump out the test pins on the ALDL connector and verify both fans run. I had one to go bad and it would get to 234 or so in 90 degree weather with the air on. I assumed that the vette just ran hot. Then latter I found the bad fan motor.
I run a 180 degree stat, in my '93, here in Oklahoma.. gets hot during the summer. Works fine for me. Also can get cold here during the winter, so I felt 180 would be better than the 160 stat.
Hi Blake, It's all been said, but I stayed with the OEM 180 stat. I did replace the OEM water pump with a Meziere HD electric pump and installed switches to manually control the cooling fans. On the 92, we have a primary and secondary fans. I'm not sure if yours is the same or if you have a "hi-lo" fan arrangement. Yes, check that both work, they should come on when you select A/C on. Most of the time it seems that the radiator is dirty between the A/C condensor and the radiator. Flush out your system and don't use Dexcool, stay with the green stuff, but don't go more than 50-50 mix and be sure to use distilled water. The jury is still out on Water wetter and the pellets. Just a note, the 160 vs 180 stat, the 160 will open sooner than the 180, but once there're open both are the same at operating temp of the radiator. Some praise the 160, but I really think it's because they changed fluid and cleaned the fins on the radiator. :chevy
Thanks for all your input.. I cannot find a 160 stat locally, and my dad says I should just get a 180 HI-FLOW thermostat from JEGs... I would think there would be more benefits from a Hi-Flow 180 stat over a regular 160 stat.. I dunno, but my goals for today are to hopefully clean out between radiator and shroud and get some Water Wetter in there.
You live in an area that is hot as mine. Order the 160 if you have to. What ever you order make sure it says for lt1. There are alot of t stats in summit or jegs but only 2-3 will fit our cars.

I went instead for a 180 HI-Flow stat... the guy said it would fit my '93 vette.. so i hope it does!
