I have a problem with my headlight on the passenger side. Sometimes it will open and sometimes it will not open at all. I know it has power since the light comes on when I turn them on. I have pulled the harness apart and made sure that it is making a clean connection. Do those motors "Go Bad"??? the car only has 36K miles on it and I am not sure what else to check. It there a fuse or relay somewhere that could have went bad that would cause onlyone side not to open? Thanks for any help or suggestions.
P.S. I made it thru Isabel and I hope that nobody lost their Vette by that *itch of a storm.
Actually you don't know if the motor is getting power because the headlight and the motor get power through separate paths. measure for 12v on the socket and jump 12v to the motor terminals to see if it runs all the way open. If it doesn't, the trouble is in the motor and probably the reversing contacts are pitted.
Pop the hood and turn the lights on, if the adjustment **** on the top of the motor turns, then you have power to the motor. Rebuilding the motor is pretty easy, there are three bushings that balance the gear, you can get the bushings from Ecklers and they cost about $5.00 a set plus shipping.

Not on an 84. There are no bushings and the motor cannot be rebuild because no body makes the brushes or limit switches. Problem could be in the relays on the drivers side in the front next to the radiator. Try swapping the two that are alike and see if the problem moves. More likely it is the internal switches.
Can you open it manually with the headlight switch in the "middle" position and then get it to close by turning the switch off?
Try turning on the lights and then give the **** on the motor a twist. Does the motor start turning then?
The motors are not a very good design. They changed them completely by 88 and those work pretty good.
Yes, I can open the lights manually if I unplug the motor like the manual says. Atre you saying leave them plugged in and start to turn the motor to see if will engage? If so, when I do that if it starts to open then what can cause that problem? Is it the motor going bad? Does anyone know a good place to get a new one with getting bent over on the price and how hard are they to put in?
TIA,
Solomon

That test checks for problems with the brushes. Some times they are dirty or making a poor connection and turning the motor will get them to make contact. It is not a fix, but then you can open up the motor and clean the armature / brushes and check their tension. If it does not start up the motor then the limit switches in the bottom of the motor are not making contact. You can clean them with emery cloth folded over and they may last awhile longer.
You know this may be stupid, but I had the same problem with the pass. side.
Sprayed some WD40.
Been working fine since.

I also have the 84 and have the same problem. In my case, the right plastic cover that goes over the light assy. was hitting the front of the hood. Have somone turn on the head lamps while you press on the top of the right head light door and see if the door opens, if it does you need to adjust the plastic cover.
I actually pulled what I assume was the relay and it had sap like stuff caked all over it and inside the plug and relay. I cleaned them off the best I could with simple green and it started to work everynow and then. Do you have any suggestions as to what I could use that will not harm the electrical but will get that crap out of there so it can make a good connection?
