im going to bore my block to a 355 and use strong pistons.
I will keep my crank and rods.
What pistons do you recomend?
I going to run a low comp around 8,9:1. ( Going with SC later )
It is going to be hard for you to get that compression with the heads that you have now, you will have to have pistons what are dish and with more then -20cc
If you are not going to change more then the pistons then just go with SpeedPro/TRW forged pistons.
SRP, Pro Tru and Probe are all really good pistons too.
the comp im going to use isent really set yet. So any tips is very helpful...
I think my rods and crank all ballanced and tight with ARP bolts would hold up nice.
My goal is 450 hp with a lt1 intake+ my other mods in sign and a SC with water injections.
I would say your right, but even forged pistons don't like much of that.
Yes, however forged pistons don't crater and flake like cast pistons due under minor amounts of knock.
The other weak link, however, is the cast rings.
Forged pistons are, I am sure all will agree, superior to cast. but what I am wondering is at what point do you need the rattle and expense of forged, and how do you gauge that point - CR or what?
It has more to do with all those things. I have a friend whose got a 600HP smallblock running hypereutectic pistons at 7500RPM. Forged on the otherhand is lighter and better for high reving strokers requiring a lighter reciprocating assembly. (And we already covered boost and detonation)
So in short, it depends on the application. What might be good for my friends 600HP motor, isn't good for a 434 ci stroker with N2O or F/I.

Ok. With you so far, but not many of us have 600 horse motors or big nitrous strokers, so are us poor folks with say up to a 383 with 400 ponies likely to be OK with hypereutectic. I just have standard slugs in mine (admittedly with probably 300hp or less), and I haven't broken one yet. (and believe me- I've tried!)
Just looking for some kind of rule of thumb
O.k. now your question is more involved with WHICH hyper piston to go with.
I'm not familiar with the HP constraints on the stock pistons. But if you're machining a new engine you'll need new pistons and the price difference between hyper and forged is IMO marginal, but that's just me.
N/A w ~10.5-10.8:1 400HP, hyper pistons will be o.k.
The pistons my buddy got were stronger than stock pistons though. I'll see if I can find out who makes them, but the only reason he went with them, is because he couldn't get forged pistons for a Ford 347 .030 over, and the hypers were available and appropriate.
wiseco makes forged pistons w/a 20cc dish for blower apps. i got mine from www.dirttrackthunder.com for less than $500, with moly rings, pins and double spirolocks.
so do you agree that the weak part in a stock engine is the pistons and the rings?
rpm kills rods and cranks, and im not taking it over 6000rpm so that would hold nice with som arp bolts.
