Yesterday I hit a bump pretty hard and drove to the store and when I returned the car didn't wanna start. Then, it ran and died a few miles later...after a few tries it was running. This happend on and off throughout the day and ceased. Today same situation. After not wanting to start I was locked out by VATS. Other related details...seems like it is just spinning over with no spark or fuel. Are there any relays to check for this situation? Opti is new, coil is new, wires are new. When running it runs great, so the likely hood of bad injectors seems small. and when it stalls there is no fault or stumble, rather just a ignition shut down. Fuel pump is functioning properly. All fuses are snug and good. I am pissed off to the max with this car and need help before I sell it for $10.00 and a 6-pack.
As always help is greatly appreciated.
Cheers,
Robert
Re: HELP!!! 94 dies whenever it wants (Bob Mosaic)
If all the symtoms started after hitting the "bump", you might want to check the connectios at the ECM and the chip inside. A sharp jar could have knocked some eof the connections or the chip loose. Check the gorund connectons also.
Re: HELP!!! 94 dies whenever it wants (Steel Blue 91)
i agree as well....just a needle in a hystack situation here. Who in the hll knows what it is. Hoping a relay is the culprit but need to eliminate some possiblilties.
thanks a million,
Robert
Re: HELP!!! 94 dies whenever it wants (neverendingproject)
nope, it is simply not running. once the i press in the clutch and the motor stops free spininng the battery light glows as well as the servive engine light.
Re: HELP!!! 94 dies whenever it wants (Bob Mosaic)
when i hit the bump it was fine so i am just mentioning it for thoughts. it was once i shut the car off it spun over but didn't wanna run. It could be a VATS issue as well
Re: HELP!!! 94 dies whenever it wants (Bob Mosaic)
ok...here's the latest in this problem....went to start the car a few minutes ago and it woulnd't start. finally ran but ran like crap....sputtering all over the place and such. Now it will not start at all. The opti is new. I am guessing the ecm for now since it on the driver's side where the impact was absorbed most. Anythoughts?
Cheers,
Robert
Re: HELP!!! 94 dies whenever it wants (Bob Mosaic)
additional note, the tach was all over the place when it was running badly but not prior. if it where the opti poor running would be the first sign of problems. I will remove and inspect the opti for sure, but any one have goo d PCM knowledge?
thanks,
robert
Re: HELP!!! 94 dies whenever it wants (Bob Mosaic)
I'd look at the opti last, if I were you. Lot of work to get that thing out, and if it's new, I'd think that would be the last thing that was wrong.
What I would do, though, is make sure the connector that connects the low and high resolution signal wires from the opti to the PCM is still securely connected. There was post a while back about someone's (I think Nathan Plemons') car running like poopie, and it turned out it was corrosion on this connector. The wires connect in a group on top of the opti (you probably know this). Just make sure that thing is snug, or pull it off and make sure a pin has broken off of the connector. Also, if this connector is faulty, it will make your tach jump all over the place.
Check the basic stuff first before you go to big ticket items like the opti. Good luck.
Sounds like the same problem I have and I don't have good news. My opti was 6 weeks old. Did the exact same thing as yours. The wiring harness (which was new) has corrosion on it. Where it came from is anyones guess. I just replaced the wiring harness and it's still dead. I'm afraid the opti had corrosion in it from the beginning and it's corroded from the inside out. If I were you, the first thing I would check is the wiring harness to the opti.
Re: HELP!!! 94 dies whenever it wants (Bob Mosaic)
It'll throw a code if you keep trying to crank it and it doesn't start. Mine did the same. That or if it's running like poopie, the high/low res off the opti aren't sending the right signals, it'll throw a code.
Re: HELP!!! 94 dies whenever it wants (Bob Mosaic)
here is the latest...i had 4 codes pulled up.
16- low res pulse failure
18- injector circuit failure
36- hi res pulse failure
42- ign control failure
the opti is new so I am strongly against it ias the problem but the ecm throwing these codes erratically may be the cause. Has this ever happened to guys with bad ECMs??? the bump was right over this area and most likey the cause should the ECM be bas. In addition, the scan tool didn't always go on once hooked up to the ALDL. Once it powered up and once i turned the car on it powered down. Another time it was off until i fuddled with the ECM harness. I was also wondering who offers a quality ECM?
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU,
Robert
Re: HELP!!! 94 dies whenever it wants (Bob Mosaic)
Bad connection at the opti of the ignition module would throw those codes. I'd still check the plug to the opti and tighten the connections just to be sure.
On a side note, I think I've got mine running. The wiring harness and it not turning over weren't related. I guess it was just my dumb luck. The wire going to the starter wasn't even hand tight. Fixed that and all seems well for now.
