Besides pulling crap into my fuel lines are there any adverse effects of not having the screen on my pump.........Namely fuel starvation. My thinking here is that the screen may hold some fuel while the fuel gets thrown towards the back of the tank during launches.
Installation..............The longer end of the screen faces toward the drivers side of the car perpendicular to the rear bumper? Is that correct?
I'd advise against running without it. There is crap in your tank that could be sucked in to the pump which could either kill the pump or block the filter flow.

I don't think the sock would affect starvation.
:iagree: The fuel pump makes so much volume and PSI that most of it goes right back in the tank.
Unless you have a seriously high HP engine, that pump is more then enough.
The pick-up has it's own partitioned area in the tank to prevent the problem you are worried about.
I put in a Racetronix Walbro 340 pump kit & hand cleaned the tank out. My pump kit came with a new sock/filter. My factory fuel tank has a plastic surge tank/divider in the bottom that ran forward & aft, I put the sock on-in so that it fit into the surge tank. It appeared to me that if the sock ran left to right it would sit on top of the surge tank & render the small plastic surge tank/divider useless??
You MUST use the filter sock provided with the Walbro pump. Failure to do so will shorten the life of the pump considerably and void your warranty. The filter sock has nothing to do with fuel reserves etc. Its only function is to keep contamination out of the pump.
Yes, I agree. But which way should the screen/sock run? Should it fit into the plastic surge tank/divider which runs with the length of the car? Or should it run from left to right & sit across the plastic surge tank?
