What does "SYS" mean?
There are several things that can cause the trouble you are having, hence the reason I gave the rather vague choice for the poll. There are several different codes that your car can set, in several different systems.
You can have ECM trouble codes which are typically accompanied by a service engine soon light. You can have ABS/ASR trouble codes and you can have CCM trouble codes which usually come along with the SYS light.
The two most common CCM codes are for a low battery and for a wiring fault, usually because of an aftermarket stereo. Since you've had it for a while the battery probably isn't it or you would have had trouble by now. There is a procedure for retrieving trouble codes from the CCM. It's not terribly complicated but I don't have my book in front of me right now. You can follow this procedure to get a trouble code, then we can look into that and see what it is.
BTW my personal experience has shown that you can get a SYS light if your courtesy lights fuse is blown. If you've got an aftermarket stereo it could likely be the culprit as well.
before you get too worked up, replace your batter if it's old. This might save you a lot of head aches. I had this problems and that's all it was.

I had sys flashing and it turned out that my battery was dying.
