HELP!! Rough idle, missing, backfire on new engine.
New engine, 355, miniram, zz9, 52 mm, ported stock heads (2.02valves), mod MAF, MSD, Level VI PROM, all new relays, etc. Just re-installed fresh rebuilt motor with above items. It will sometimes backfire (intake side) if I slap open the throttle blades from inside the engine compartment, it idles rough, and it sputters -almost like it's missing- in all rpm ranges whether sitting still or under load. Can't figure it out. Timing is set at 6 degrees like TPIS recommends, plug wires are all new as is cap. I did re-charge the battery without the motor hooked up a few times. Could the MAF be bad? Ignition bad somewhere? My scanner shows "spark advance" hunting around between 20 and 30 AT IDLE - is this normal? Also, yesterday, the volts were reading low and eventually my battery drained (while running over only 30 minutes) from 11.4 down to 8.4 and then the motor died - it did this 4 times and would only hold a charge for about a tenth of a mile. Put in new alternator and battery and now it charges to 13.4 to 13.6 is this range OK? What is normal. I have a scanner - where can I get a list of normal readings for MAF, idle spark advance, injector pulse, battery voltage, etc.? Any help would be greatly appreciated. :mad  :mad

I'd double & triple check the distributor to make sure you got it in correctly. Sounds like the same thing that happened to mine when I installed the motor. I got it 2 teeth off and it was NOT healthy.

I just went throught through the same problem, turned out to be the distributor had been intsalled incorrectly. Didn't figure it out for 3 weeks though. I'd check the dist. and make absolutly sure it's right.

Hey screamin' eagle. What do you mean it turned out to be the distributor was installed wrong? How so? Even if you are a "couple of teeth off" as some have said, it doesn't matter if the rotor is still pointed correctly in relation to the cap. I am starting from a brand new motor, with it already at #1 TDC, so it shouldn't matter as long as the rotor is pointing on number 1. Please explain.
