Sorry for the silly question here but I am receiving mixed input on which ATF to use in my '87. I believe the owners manual says Dexron II but the guy at the auto parts store tells me Dexron III.
I trust you guys more than the guys at the auto parts store :D
I am on my second rebuild in less than 12 months. I think the first one was bad workmanship but also the heat out here in the desert is a killer. I am thinking of an external trans cooler.
Anyone have any experience or opinions on these and best brands etc.
Redline Synthetic Automatic Transmission Fluid
D4 ATF AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FLUID provides 33% greater operating viscosity, 1/3 the evaporation of petroleum ATF's, and the wear protection of API GL-4 gear oils. This improved wear protection makes D4 ATF the perfect automatic or maual transmission fluid, since the GL-4 gear protection improves long-term durability. Red Line D4 also provides the best low-temperature shiftability in automatic and manual transmissions which require ATF's. Conventional ATFs break down at high temperatures, depositing varnish on the clutch faces and creating sludge which plugs hydraulic shift valves.
