Mine has NEVER worked and I've yet to hear one do so.
HOW do I ascertain whether I even have one fitted?
According to the owners manual, I've done everything to test it, but alas, silence happens :(
I'm wondering now if all C4's even HAD one fitted...or maybe it's just our converted ones here in OZ that missed out???
The only thing CLOSE to an alram that sounds is if I leave eadlights on after I turn off the engine, and even THAT'S SO QUIET you have to listen for it (Would love to even be able to find the ding ding ding sound to see if I can make it louder!
Does the security light come on in the tell-tale panel when you shut the engine off, and remove the key? It should start blinking. Roll down windows, shut car off, get out, lock door with power lock, reach in through window and try to open the door, the alarm should go off. I believe that's the easiest way to test it. But if the security light doesn't flash, then it would all be for naught.

My car has been fitted (prior to my buying it) with an immobiliser of some sort; which requires a special 'key' to disable it. Above where I put this 'key' is a flashing light (LED)...whether it has been wired to take the place of the std SECURITY light, I'm not sure, as the security light on that panel does not light up...
My security light works all the time. but alarm does not go off if i grab the handle on out side. i did have it go off one time when i first got it though.
dont know if grabbed it from inside with the windows down though

Hmm, can't help with this one.
I had a brain cramp last night. When testing the factory alarm, reach in through the open window, and manually unlock the door by sliding the lever. Then try to open the door. Just reaching in through the door and moving the inside handle will not set off the alarm.

Re: Alarm not working on C4 (smacko)
Smacko, I don't know if C4's shipped-to/customized-in Australia were equipped with alarms, but on our 94 coupe LT1 in USA/NJ, it does have one.
However, we discovered both 'door ajar' switches had failed, which among other symptoms, caused the alarm to not work (i.e. sound the normal horn when the door is opened by reaching through the window).
The driver's 'door ajar' switch indicates the door being opened and is the 2nd step of setting the alarm on our 94 (the 3rd being locking the door with the power door lock switch, and the 4th being the closing of the door).
If by chance, even after removing your ignition key, your radio/windows do not go-off/stop working when you open the door, maybe your 'door ajar' switches are not working, which might have something to do with your alarm problems.
Hope this helps... .
P.S. if your 'door ajar' switches are bad, on our 94, we didn't have to take the door apart, but was able to replace them using the ACDelco OEM part (from Eckler's) and a special procedure documented in the service manual, right through the 'door ajar' switch hole.

My appologies; I double checked; neither of the door ajar lights work-it was the hatch ajar one I was thinking of...Dunno; might be cheaper in the long run to post my car back to the states, get them to iron out all the bugs then post it back! LOL OR 'import' a good GM tech over here to do it!!! hehhe
