hi this is my first post and my problem is my serpentine belt keeps ripping off my car. it's a 94 and i have the underdrive crank and alt. pulleys on and i'm using the gates 060640 part number belt which is the one the i think i'm supposed to use.i've gone through 5 belts in the past week and also the gates belt 060640 is very hard to get on i have to use a screwdriver to get the belt over the alt. even with the tentioner up. i've also tried a 1 inch bigger belt but that ripped too. any help would be very appriciated thanks
Re: serpentine belt keep ripping please help (396stroker)
welcome to the forum......
sounds like possibly a pully alighnment problem...
i hade a freind that had his p.s. pully off and than pressed it on just a hair too far and than he was shreding belts.
another freind left a spacer out and had same problem.
neither one was really noticably out of line ,but apparently it dosnt take much..
hope that may help

Welcome
Do not use a screwdriver on a belt for install. If you are getting the tensioner all the way over and it won't fit, then you need to go bigger. You are likely tearing them when installing. Also, you might have ruined a pulley rib already. Check them out. :seeya

I kept losing belts on my '96 and I think I tracked it down to coolant leaking out of the water pump onto the top of the cranck pulley which caused slippage that led to breaking. It's just one more think consider.

Just went to the Goodyear "Gatorback" belt... No results yet held for my wheels to arrive. I use a stock length belt with my ATI underdrive damper & stock diameter Alt pulley... http://www.goodyearbeltsandhose.com/cars/gatopoly.html
Posted recently looking for a link to a Kevlar serpentine drive belt but never found one. I know the belt driven supercharger guys are going to Kevlar drive belts, still looking though.

I have a 94 LT1 also and the belt installation is a &^%$ at best! I have had three different manufacturers belts and not a one went on easily. Tensioner fully pulled back (what a tight fit there too) and in the end I loosened the alternator and got the belt on. If you do this, make sure the tensioner is pulled back all the way. Once the belt or over the lip of the pulley and set down in its place, reset the alternator and tension the belt. If you try and force the belt on with a screwdriver, I'd agree with the guys above, it will not only ruin the belt, but screw up the pulley too. No No Screw Driver, No No.. :nono:
Re: serpentine belt keep ripping please help (Ajs94LT1)
Check that all pulleys are in line and then run the engine and check they are all straight – my power steering pulley is slightly bent and the belt moves forwards and backwards – it’s shredding the belt (over 4 months) I found some of the kevlar string wrapped around the A/C Compressor last week.
Seems that the PS pulley is delicate and easily bent.
