I'm having an impossible time figuring out why my TPIS throttle body sticks when the car is running, but not while it's off. I want to take the throttle body apart so that I can pull the rod out and lubricate it, and while it's apart I want to replace the throttle spring. This throttle body doesn't seem to have the snap to it that my other ones have.
I'm looking at my spare one, and on the throttle bracket side, there's just the fat end of the pin. On the other side, it seems to be a flat piece that the TPS lever is attached to.
I'm not sure where to start here. Obviously the butterflies have to come off, but that's easy. It's getting this shaft out that's got me stumped. Anybody done this?
Not likely. It came with the car and I have no receipts for it. I'm also not too interrested in letting the car sit for a month while they do something that I could do in an hour.
Re: How do I take a throttle body apart? (Jim85IROC)
I had the same question too. I've had a tb sitting on my bench for a while I need to get to but haven't had time. I think I know what has to happen, but was going to post to make sure. Mine is a stock tb though, it may be different from yours. If I remember right, on the side opposite the tps it looks like there is a small disk that is held on my hammering on the edge with a punch or something. It looks to me that if you grind off the smashed "flanges", the disk will just slide off the end of the shaft. I'm then gussing that under the disk there is an oblonged slot that was going the opposite direction as the slot disk was. So with the disk off, you can slide the shaft out. That is all speculation though. Was wanting someone to back that up before I started grinding.

Grind the back side of the 4 screws that holds the butterflies. Remove screws, remove butterflies, hammer on center of throttle shaft (cable side) til the washer on the end (tps side) comes loose. slide washer so big hole will slide over shaft then remove shaft.

My 90's TB seemed a little sluggish. After removing the throttle body, used a little 3M Throttle Body Cleaner, compressed air, and sparyed the shaft area, blowing cleaner along the shaft. You can also check for shaft play. Check the spring side for any gunk that could cause spring bind.
After all that, I lubed with the ever popular WD 40, sprayed the spring and it was noticeably smoother. Just what I needed, an easy throttle.
If the thing is really gunked up, you may have to remove the shaft and check things out.

Ahh, so you can just pound it out. That's basically how I thought it might come apart though. I'm curious why you have to grind the backside of the butterfly screws though.

Hmmm, mine came right out without grinding. But I know it has been apart before too. They probably put different screws back in mine. The "bump" is probably put on as a safety to make sure you don't suck one down the intake.
