Well, my right side headlight motor finally took a crap on me. Is it more economical to have it rebuilt, or should I just replace it altogether? I am looking at a couple of used ones on ebay. Also, is an 88 motor/assembly compatible with an 85? TIA
I purchased one off of eBay for my driver side light a while back. Unfortunately, those motors are going to be in about the same shape as the one you have. It got me about another year. For the cost of that, I recommend getting a rebuild kit and doing it yourself. As for your question about the 88 motors, no, in 88 they changed the design. The motors are 84-87 and then changed to 88-96. A couple Vette catalog companies offer an upgrade to the 88 design. I think they run around $400 or so.
Could be a relay. Is the problem going up or down? Can you put it to half way and then make it work?
I have spare relays for troubleshooting.
If it turns out to be the motor there are a couple of things you can do that will buy you time. I can crack a motor in 15min. Done mine a couple of times.
BTW there are no rebuild kits for the 84-87 motors. You can get gears, but the problem is usually the contacts / brushes internally.
