Here’s a question for all you guys who have completed a C5 Front Brake conversion.
I want to check clearances, so I need to know 2 measurements.
1. The radius from the centre of the hub to the outside edge of the mounted C5 caliper?
2. The offset of the hub face and the mounted C5 calipers vertical (or outside) face?
Sorry, I am not an engineer and I don't have a micrometer. but I can tell you this...
It takes 17" wheels and stock 17" C4 (any of them) wheels will not work without the adapter plates.
The C5 wheels bolt right up to 88 and up C4's and will accept the C5 brakes without adapters.
The spokes in the C5 wheels are concave( or maybe that's convex...pmn any event they are rounded out) at the point they join the rim....this allows them to clear the C5 calipers which are considerably wider than the C4 calipers.
Sorry I can't give you numbers...but either use adapters behind your C4 wheels or use C5 wheels
I am pretty sure that the A mold wheels will work. I have aftermarket ZR1 style and did this conversion with no clearance problems.
:D :D :D I stand to be corrected :D I had converted to C5 wheels before I did the brake conversion and from what I read here, I thought all C4 wheels needed adapters...thanks for putiing out better info! :D
Guys thanks for the info so far, but changing wheels to anything other than my standard 88 wheels is not a viable option as I live in Australia and don't have easy access to differing wheels form differing models whithout excessive import duty fees. However I do have access to varous 3 or 2 piece wheels (that will cost less and look better than any standard wheel) where I can specify the offset's and how they will clear the brakes, hence the need for mesuments.
While Im at it let me see if I can clear up my orignal questions.
1. A radius measurement from the hub center to the outermost point of a mounted C5 caliper a adapter kit.
2. A measurement of the offset that indicates the difference between the wheel–to-hub surface and the outer most vertical surface of a mounted C5 caliper, again using an adapter kit.
To anybody that has done this conversion they are easy mesuments to take, so I am hoping someone can help me out...
I understand your situation. As long as your "standard '88 wheels" are 17", and not 16", there shouldn't be a problem. You may need to use "spacers" (they move the rim outward by what ever size you get).
I'll get flamed for not knowing the size of standard '88 rims, but that's ok, I have big shoulders, I can handle it.
If you still want the dimensions, let me know. I'll check it out on my '84 in the morning..........
Not a problem, I'll pull a wheel of the '84 in the morning and get those dim's 4 u.
If I understand you, (the second question) you want to know the dimension from the surface on the rotor (mounted) where the wheel mates, to the outer most surface of the C5 caliper, lets call that the offset, makes us sound like we know what we're talking about....
