Alright I did a search in the archives. It seems that I have four options on timing chains.
1. Replace the stock chain with stock chain periodically
2. Replace with the expensive Cloyes Early model LT1 Chain
3. Convert to a new Opti, new Timing cover, and a GM LT4 Extreme duty chain
4. Convert to an Electric water pump, new Opti, New TC, and Cloyes double roller
Is this correct?
If so why not just get the Expensive Cloyes to fit stock?
by the time you replace everything it costs almost double.
Any thoughts or corrections are welcom.
Well close,
If you have a 94 or 95 LT1 you dont need the Timing cover or Opti so all you need is the double roller chain and gears (less than $50) and the water pump (about $200).
So for the same money as the more expensive stock chain you get a better timing chain and pick up a few ponies.
Now if you have a 91 or 92 LT1 and need an opti (good chance if you are needing to replace the timing chain) then you might as well spend the couple of extra bucks and upgrade to the newer style with the vacume line (you will save money in the long run by buying fewer Opti's)
The 96 LT1 and LT4 with the CPS is a more dificult proposition and requires some machine work to acomplish.
I went with the Cloyes double roller unit on my 92, but I was already running the new style opti and the electric water pump. If you want to maintain the stock water pump and stock opti then your options are pretty limited. If you convert to the newer opti and use an electric pump you can do anything you want with the timing chain.
Ok, after a couple hours searching I have found two aftermarket timing chain sets, Summit CompCams CCA-3206 92-94 Lt1 500$ and Exotic Muscle Cloyes C1673 290$. WTH!! L98 guy's can get a good set for 40 bucks. :smash: I can not believe that it cost that much more to machine that cam sprocket :mad . I could'nt find a price on the OEM set so I'll be calling Superior monday.
So how many miles can you get out of the stock LT1 set, I've got 50K on her?
I only had 45k on mine. I was rebuilding the engine (new cam etc.) and when I saw the slop in the chain, I was suprised that it ran as good as it did. I converted to the electric wp, and late style opti, and then used a Summit dual chain. I had to grind a little off the inside of the timing chain cover to get the clearance I needed. Good luck.
I'm running the Cloyes Double Roller as well. The CHEAP one. The price difference makes up for the electric water pump that's need. And THAT'S a good part to have on a 383! :yesnod:
I have one in the GM bag still for my 93. It was never used as I went with a stroked 396 package. If you want it, let me know. How does 25 dollars plus shipping? I am in Hawaii though. Your call , email me. Steve
Ok, just talked to Chirs @ Superior 800-728-8267 the GM set is sold seprately Chain 25.42, Crk Sprocket 22.16, Cam Sprocket 29.14. These prices were quoted with my KCCA discount, not sure if the forum's is the same. That's alot better, I kinda fliped out when I saw that set @ 500 bucks.
I will for sure get a new chain, but I want to inspect the sprockets before I replace them.
