Re: Cleaning L98 (terrydennis)
You can safely wash your L98 with a pressure washer or garden hose, or at the do-it-yourself car wash. When I do mine, I get it hot, then use gunk degreaser. Let it sit on the motor for a minute and go to it. I don't spray directly at the alternator or distributor but they do get wet. Look over the motor area thoroughly in the light before beginning. That way you can see where the most grime is and where to concentrate the spray. It took me about five engine washes to really get it clean. Now she shines!
Now.........where cand I find a car wash with a lift? :yesnod:
I do mine with Simple Green without issues. A few things you want to watch. As mentioned, the dist should not get a direct shot of water. Likewise the alt, IAC and TPS should be avoided. That's not to say they won't get wet, just don't soak them. If you have a open lid, put a white ( or ant bright color) towel over the open filter. This will give you a visual reminder that it's there so you make sure to remove it when you're finished. Don't ask how I know about that.
Some chemicals will turn the valve covers brown ... so be careful. I don't know if "Gunk" will do that, but I'd be cautious. I've used Simple Green and never had any problems, though my covers are already brown from a previous owner's mistake.
Sure wash the he!! out of it, with electronic ignition, you won't have any problems. Just don't spray water up the intake! For your aluminum stuff, mag wheel cleaner works great!!
