Default X vs H ??? exhaust help ....

I just got my new 396 combo together and I'm ready for some custom exhaust.

I have Hooker 2151 headers and I have a pair of new Borla 3" XR-1 race mufflers.

I'm doing the full exhaust in dual 3" pipe and I'm wondering if I should do an H balance tube or an X crossover ???

The car is an 88 convertible, so I don't know how much room I have to play with having the stock X brace underneath.

Anyone have any under carriage or exhaust pics?

I know my Corsa has an H pipe just after the resonator.......

The tubes are 2.5" and there's plenty of room.....

Ditto on the Factory LT-4 system and it is 2.75".

Some guys are replacing the resonator with an x-pipe and don't seem to be having any problems.

also:
Can anyone confirm if a x-over of somekind improves performance in some way? How 'bout location? I have seen where an aerosole or paint or something is sprayed on to the pipes, motor is run and wherever the paint turned color or evaporated, that's where the crossover is placed??

I'm not sure about your vette, but I've seen a Rustang GAIN 3 hp on the dino w/ an X pipe vs. open headers.

The H or X pipe will only help if placed in the right location. I don't remember who it was but a forum menber posted about installing true duals 3 inches and lost 2 tenths in the quarter just proves theirs more to it than just hanging on the biggest pipe that you can find. where is the right location well it depends on what headers you are using how long the collectors are and
without a lot of time on a dyno you are just guessing. Good Luck

The total pipe length from the head to the X intersection is important. You should sign up for the free header program on my website. It will give you a good estimate of where the X intersection should be located. Read all the instructions carefully, especially those related to modifying the output lengths to compensate for incorrect pipe diameters.

One thing you will find is that those SuperComps are intermediate length headers (26"). Many people cut their headers apart and rebuild them to more suitable dimensions. A better collector cone is usually installed as well. Also, the x is a better arrangement than an H if you can fit it in the chassis without compromising best pipe lengths. In any case, some sort of properly located expansion detail is necessary in the collectors to get proper wave action in the header. Power losses from overlength collectors are especially noticable in the upper midrange and peak power RPMs, thus the lower drag MPH with no crossover.

I know this is not pertaining to your origianl question, but would you mind posting a pick of your mufflers w/ tips, I currently have muffler elim's on my GS w/ the resonator removed and the "old school" sound is really getting on my nerves at this point. I was going to run the standard Borla's since I love the sound of them on my friends ZR-1, if you could post some pics that would be great.

Thanks,
Chris
