"Goopy" starter- can it keep the car from starting?
I was just underneath my car, and noticed that there was tons of "goop" on the starter, oil pan, pretty much everywhere. Like it hadn't been cleaned off in years.
About a 1/4 of a bottle of Simple Green later, pretty much all of the "goop" is gone. I noticed that there was some between the contacts of the starter and the wires leading into it. Could this have caused the starter problems I've recently been having?
Since they are sparkly and clean now, should I connect everything back together to see if it is fixed, or should I still pull out the starter and have it tested?

Oil and grease on the outside of the starter won't hurt its performance. Now on the inside.....that's a different story. I would connect it up and give it a try.

A lot of goop had gotten between the connectors to the battery. Enough so that the starter couldn't get any juice. After cleaning the connections, everything is running perfectly. :hurray:
