Sometime in the last week or so, I had begun hearing a shrieking noise from under the hood, kind of like when a belt is tensioned incorrectly. Its intermittent, comes and goes... Its not the serpentine, because the noise never changes pitch with revs, and it continues for a few seconds after the engine shuts off. I figured it out that it seems to be coming from the fan.
Anybody have an idea what's wrong? Car has 137K on it. I am not a great mechanic (no tools, no time), but any advice? Is it about to fail miserably? Its embarassing to drive right now, everyone freaks at stoplights wondering what the hell is making that noise. Is this a job for a green wrencher?
Sounds like the fan motor is freezing up. Just to be sure it's the fan, try to move it by hand. A good fan will spin with almost no resistance. Another check would be to apply 12 volts directly from the battery to the fan.
