I recently inherited a 84 Corvette. The car only has like 65,000 miles on it but it runs like crap. It does have the cross-fire injection setup on it. I know the air filter was black as heck. The injectors looked pretty suite as well. The car back fires bad and acts like it runnin on 6 cylinders. The car has been tuned up recenlty, so I dont think its anything as simple as that. I do know that the car has straight exhaust on it, no mufflers! Now being a computer controlled car do you think this would be screwing with the computer? What do you suggest?
A tune up consists of more than plugs, and a cap & rotor. The lack of mufflers will NOT hurt the ECM. That doesn't mean the ECM is OK, but it's not because of the mufflers, if it isn't. This car sounds really in need of help. Do a compression test, scope it, check for codes. Find out what is wrong before just throwing a bunch of parts at it. Even a carb won't help it if it has a flat cam or blown head gaskets. Underneath that mysterious, Crossfire intake manifold is a straight forward Chevy, 350 engine. Good luck, and...
RACE ON!!!
PS. On the carb conversion question, do a search. It has been discussed, extensively. Then if you have further questions...
The Xfire is notorious for air leaks between the intake manifold base and the plenum lid. If that hasn't been touched in 20 years, you may as well pull that and replace the gasket. Over time the gasket material will disappear. If it has straight exhaust, does that mean no O2 sensor? Also, check out the EGR valve. Any codes?
