Just picked up a Cobra CB and am in need of an antenna.
I like the looks of the rear mount antennas they sell in Ecklers
for C5's and wondering, can they be fitted on a C4?
Are you talking about the license plate mounts? Not sure if the plastic mount for a C5 will work on a C4 but believe that it's the same.
I took an old computer case, aluminum, cut it to fit the plate bolt holes (4), polished it, drilled the antenna hole and mounted it. Works great, looks great. One problem that the C5 guys have had is the plastic mount breaking. It will have a lot of stress on it.
Yes, I am talking about the licience plate mount.
Sounds like your an innovative kind of guy, using a "computer case".
I was thinking of kind of the same thing, getting a stronger flat
metal support to reinforce the bumper.

I bolted a small piece of square 'tubing' to the aluminum sub frame underneath the rear fascia and extended a flat piece of 1/8 plate out past the fascia and mounted the antenna right to that.
My CB mechanic told me I needed to have the bracketry directly mounted to the ground plane of the car and not just attached by wire somehow. I don't know about 'need' but it works great.
We use CBs for club runs a lot. I make CB mounts out of 3/16" x 1 1/4" flat stock with the outer end rounded off and painted black. Cut the length so you can bolt one end directly to the frame and the other end extends far enough beyond the rear so the antenna doesn't hit the rear of the Vette. On the C4s the bar mount clears the bottom of the rear facia fine by using a spacer between it and the frame about 1 1/4" thick. When I did it on the GF's C5, I ran it out through the "vent slot" on the passenger side. I use Firestick "No Ground Plane" antennas and matching cable (remember the length can't be shortened). I use gromets and silicone seal where they enter the passenger compartment. Adjust with a SWR meter and they work great. The antenna masts I use are only 36", but reception is great. I remove the antennas when not in use and cover the mount with a black rubber 3/4" tubing cap (avaiable at Autozone, etc.).
