Default 700R4 failure?

Son's car:

Was shifting fairly late from 2-3 yesterday, maybe 2,500 rpm with light throttle.

Later in the day the shift drifted up to 5,000 rpm. Then lost second and third all-together. Now only has first and reverse.

I'm thinking it's bought the farm at 90,000ish miles. Would like the forum's thoughts. I was going to check the TV cable next monday along with some engine work the car needs on the TPI. Alas the tranny did gave in before he could get it back here!

Shifts were feeling "soft", but some of this was the engine problems.

Any thoughts appreciated.

Thanks!

yeah i wouldve checked the TV cable first from your description, but its very likely that she bought the farm

but usually its the 1-2 and 3-4 that will go first

Such was my thought.

The engine was my concern last night, tranny secondary. The soft shift and 2500 rpm did not seem as big a problem.

When he left and headed home some 25 miles is when the shift points changed to 5,000, then refused to shift up from 1st.

Don't believe this trans has a 4th, just 1 - 3.

:iagree: my 1-2 is on it's way out now i think. it shifts good under part throttle ruling out the tv cable, but it never shifts from 1-2 at WOT unless i let off the gas. vader, does it sound like i'm due for a rebuild soon?

My last 700R4 went on the 2-3 shift. I would baby it around town, but it got to the point that the 2-3 shift would take over a second on the strip. Luckily, I got it to a trans shop, before it left me stranded. Don't waste your time on the TV cable...It's toast! Good luck, and...

RACE ON!!!

Greg, I don't know. It was the least of my focus when he had the car at my house. I have asked that question and don't know the answer yet. I wish I could get to the car to check, but distance and work will not allow until Monday.

I think it's bit the "big one".

Thanks for help Greg.

Pete
