Kev I plan on building one for my car this winter althought not like the one that I saw on the forum. The post that I saw didn't have a spring on it he just used a L shaped bolt and pulled on it a spring would be a much better idea.
Since I installed the small pulley I"m getting some belt slip when I get my blower up to max rpm that sucker pulls hard

I'm pretty sure I know what you guys are talking about and I don't mean change the subject, but I saw one guy use a turnbuckle to adjust his tensioner and then used a spring to allow for a little play. I wonder if something like that can be rigged up.

Well bart why dont you just cut grooves in your shaft on your blower and run the belt right on the blower and forget the pulley? damn what size of pulley is that a 1 inch :skep:

But my setup is going to have a bolt running through the tensioner and then the spring running from the bolt to another bolt to adjust the tension and then to the L-bracket!

here is a pick

Well fella's i made the bracket and all i can say is WOW :steering:

I started the car and nothing was rubbing and everything seems to be working fine and so i warmed up the car and took it out really quick for a spin...so i get in first gear (with out tensioner ) it would onlt get around 4-6psi at WOT?

With the tensioner i made 6psi with out even punching it? so i got a little scared i have not had my car pull that hard since i had the bottle on boost!

So i am doing around 40mph and floor it...yep 6psi right off the bat and climbing hard... again i got off very fast because i was afraid of getting pulled over and it went from 40mph to 65 mph in nothing flat! not even at my red line yet and it looked like 10psi at around 4800rpm! (i know i know i am no black bart...well atleast not yet!

So all in all it works Sweet! but that is the short term of it right now who knows only the future can tell what it will hurt?

But also the spring is holding it static at full tension and when i was reving it the tensioner was giving but the spring was doing its job holding together at full static and controling the bounce!

Guys let me know if you need to know how to build it or want to see pics... will post them tomorrow!
:D :D all i can say is it rocks and i might see if my friend can build me one out of billet so it will be pretty. :leaving:

Glad to hear it helped but before you use your new found boost replace those tiny injectors or you will be replacing the engine. :banghead:

pics are coming and yes i have some injectors on the way here in a bit! then i will need to have the chip burned till i can save up money and purchase my own software and hardware to burn or go DFI or FAST or DYI syclone swap! But yes bart you are right with the extra tension you can feel how touchy the throttle is and you give it some gas and it is gone! so i really need to stop punching it around town even this morning i raise a little hell...BAD Kevin BAD :nono:

Which moves more, the spring stretching or the bracket flexing?

Seriously, the bracket needs to be triangulated if you are going to hang it off of the idler mount assy like you have.

Best of Luck.

No the L-shape bracket does not move one bit? The spring does expand but that’s about it no flexi flexi...sorry to disappoint you. But I know this because when I tested it I mounted a marker on it and then mounted another object on the other side and when I punched it the mark was still in the same location no movement for the bracket only the spring :D Also this is just a prototype and I have to clean it up and fix the little things (needed a car for work the next day)

Honestly I was surprised the bracket does not flex but I was assured that it would hold up from my old mans friend that is a iron work that it would hold up and in the end he was right and I lost 10$

Also I am going to see my friend Keith tomorrow to see about getting this bracket made out of billet!

:D

What am I looking at? You are zoomed up so close. I seem to get most of my belt slip at the crank pulley when I run the AC. Do you have AC?

Has anybody tryed to go without a spring and set the tension like in a V-belt?

gstreak..
Yes i believe Black Bart is going to create a brace that is static and once it is set it is set...i was going to do that idea and still can but i am happy for now with my now found boost :D

Also i have not tried to run my ac...living in colorado it does not get that hot only in august but next your i will let you know

Bart,
Have you observed how much the complete head unit moves under boost? I devised a way to view how far the total unit was moving under load relative to the motor. Understand that I am using a custom bracket which grabs all of the head unit holes (7 vs 5 w/ original bracket) plus the additional on the trans, and picks up the three on the head with two on the water pump (vs the original only grabbing three). It still moves nearly 3/16" towards the radiator. I was surprised that it was moving so far. ATI said that it is normal to have "some" flex in the bracket. They again stated that what I am attempting to do is beyond what the ATI units were designed, and therefore had no suggestions (big surprise).

Even with a stationary idler, you would still have the potential for flex. I am now looking at adding an additional 1/2" rib on the back side to strengthen the assy. Due to the spacers between the bracket and the head mount, it will not interfere with anything, yet add the torsional strength where it is needed.

I still use the factory idler, though modified. Very little dust being generated, even though I twist it very near max impellor speed. Max boost is 14.8 psi @ 6400.

Food for thought.

Yes I had considerable bracket flexing when I first Installed mine. At first I thought about making the bracket thicker but instead used another half inch piece of aluminum and built a bracket that runs from the engine to the back of the trensmission this reduced flexing to the point that I no longer worry about it. You notice the key word is reduced not eliminate because I still have some flex but nothing like what you describe. When you drive across a bridge you can feel it flexing and they last for decades so with the small amount of flex that I get I don't worry about it but before I made the additional bracket I had the kind of flex that you are talking about.
As for ati I no longer call them for anything we are breaking new ground and they are of no help. I think the problem is when you call them you don't get to talk to the engineers that designed it just someone that has been trained on answers to the standard questions. Weather is turning cool here will be putting mine on jack stands in a few weeks going to pull the pan and check things been four years I'm going to see what it looks like. Have you repaired all the damage from your clutch explosion ?? What did you decide on another aluminum or steel. I saw where you were asking Jeb about his street twin that should make and awesome clutch. I know the autos are consistent but I just can"t bring myself around to even considering a slush box. Guess I"m from the old school slush boxs belong in Buick Roadmasters not sports cars. I think that if I was into drag racing [that will never happen] I would use a setup like the pro-stockers use I like to do the shifting. :chevy

Sounds like a good idea, let me know how my new motor is breaking in

....no seriously :yesnod: And considering this, I'm VERY glad you're not a drag racer!

Matt the engine has less than 7000 miles on it. I didn't drive it much this year at all spent most of the summer on crutches and could not drive the vette.
It has not lost any oil pressure I'm sure the bearings will look like new but I"m worried about flexing the block at my power level so I'm going to look at the main caps for signs of movement. At my current level of boost plus nitrous the cylinder pressure is very high.
No I"m not interested in draging.
I drove a sprint car for 7 years and after driving one of those draging a moddified street car is boring just when you start to get up some speed it is all overwith and with a slush box all you do is mash the throttle and steer straight ahead  I have always thought that is why it is so popular anyone can do it very little driver skill required. Matt if you want this engine first you will need to talk Kevin into floating me a loan so I can afford to build a new sb-482 :D
