i have heard that the intake gaskets on an LT4 are designed to block the ports on the manifold and the heads. is this true? and if so does any one make a gasket that won't block the ports? i bet that by unblocking those ports some good power is freed up. if any one has a part number please let me know.
Even if you install the "77" style gaskets, the intake still blocks the ports. This means you have to port the intake to get any benefit (and it's minor at best). In addition, even if the intake is ported, the cylinder heads need to be port matched as well. Unless you're pulling the intake for some other reason, I wouldn't bother.
007, my experience was a little different from yours. My original gaskets did, indeed, block some of the opening at the top of the port. The 77's had better clearance. YMMV.
This is very interesting to me, since I was considering doing a cam swap, but not a true head job. I was thinking of doing the gasket change & a little hand port matching at the intake/head port.
After reading this thread I am not sure if my idea makes any sense or not. I know a good head job is the way to go, but I was hoping the hand approach might get me 80% of the power at 10% of the cost.
So has anyone actually just changed gasket with some add port matching and measured the results?? What do you guys think?
