I just got a part# from a Chevy dealer for 2.59 gears but the parts guy couldn't tell me if they were for a D36 or a D44. Does anyone know if D44's came with 2.59 ratio I believe it's RPO GM1 the part # is 14101375 for the 2.59's. Any info? Do 3 series ratio share the same carrier as 2-series?
Re: Are 2.59's avaliable for D44? (JUAN J SANCHEZ)
May I ask why you would go with 2:59's? there is MUCH better performance to be had with different ratios. :yesnod: I went to 3:54's from 2:59's and have never looked back.
Re: Are 2.59's avaliable for D44? (JUAN J SANCHEZ)
Those gears must go with the 2 series carrier. Has nothing really to do with the rear end per se. You can contact Richmond Gear to see if they make a 2.59 set for the Dana44 rear.
Personally I would just find the D44 with the 3.07 or something real close to that number. It isn't that many RPM's difference between the two gears at OD RPM's. Might be easier to come by as well.

Man, I could agree more here, why 2:59's ? ? ? ? ?
EDIT: Myself, I wouldn't use any other gears than "DANA".......
My .02 cents worth.
Why 2.59's? I'm gonna gear My vette as if it had a 3 speed OD, Instead of putting 3.73's and a 700R4(which I already have) behind a 550HP 400 cube small block and break trannies and get no traction on street tires, I'm gonna install a much more reliable TH400 with a lower 1st gear 2.75:1 and use 2.59's in the rear. The 2.59's + converter slippage x 1.48 2nd gear (on a TH400) gives me an overall ratio of 4.10:1's in 2nd gear, therefore instead of using 3 gears through the quarter like I would with the 700R4/3.73's combo I'll be using 2 gears through the quarter with the TH400/2.59's combo. Sure this will slow the car down from the 700R4/ 3.73's but it would be more reliable, nice highway gears in third gear and would hold up nicely to a 100-250 shot of NOS! Besides I'm not sure the car would slow down as much as one would expect! I already have a 3.07 D44 and I just sold a 3.45:1 D44. If it's cost effective I'll install the 2.59's and try it . If not I'll have to decide on whether I wanna less reliable drivetrain with good acceleration gearing and OD or TH400/3.73 combo thats reliable but not highway friendly. Any suggestions? I think it would n't be as bad as one would think.
BTW: Only GM sells the 2.59' or 2.73's and I think 2.87's for Dana rears.
I checked with Richmond, Rieder, and DTS and none have 2 series gearing for a D44 better known as Super D44.
Anyone wanna trade 2.59 D44 for a 3.07 D44?

Re: Are 2.59's avaliable for D44? (Beautiful Beast)
I 'm probably gonna have to use the 3.07:1 D44 because I may not find the 2 series gearing I want to use. The 2.59's are $450 from the dealer at a discounted price and I don't even know if they're for a D36 or D44. I'm gonna have to decide on whether to use the 3.07's w/TH400 or just put in the 700R4/ 3.73 combo and wish it well. I'l let ya know what happen's, thanks for the reply's!
Re: Are 2.59's avaliable for D44? (JUAN J SANCHEZ)
i just replaced my entire rear diff with batwing (cover) to 3.07's from 2.59. I am looking to sell my entire removed 2.59's in dana 36 case with batwing cover complete for 250-300 bucks. Let me know if you are interested. It's a fiarly simple swap.
I guess i'll have to go into Eckler's web-site. They're pretty expensive but I'll check anyway. 2.87:1's may not make sense because they're so close to 3.07 it 's not worth the hassle. If I go to a 2.59 D36 it would defeat the purpose because then I'd be going back to a weak drivetrain. Thanks for the info guy's. What I need to do is find a trans dyno if possible and get my trans(700R4) dynoed to see if it will hold up. Thanks again guys
Mine is a 84-96 D44 which is called a super D44 because the pinion diameter is larger than say a 80-82 D44 or a D44 found in a Jeep or something similiar. Thanks for the info.
