i have a stock 86 with original l98 which i just got done rebuilding this summer. it still has stock cam, iron heads and everything. the tpi is all stock too. i have all the free mods, and exhaust work tho.
so, i'm seriously thinking about getting a supercharger next spring. i've been looking and i like what ATI offers (like the air intercooler). So I called them up, and they sent me tons of info for s/cing L98 vettes. I have some questions tho. It appears like the D-1 is better for performance (10+ psi) while the P600B is only 8 or 10 psi. But then why does the P600B kit costs over $600 more? Is there a lot of custom fabrication when installing the D-1? They're both polished, and ATI offers a 3 year warranty on both. Which one would be better for my 86 with 9 to 9.5 compression? thanks
Re: difference's between ATI's P600B and D-1? (corvettemaster)
The D-1 is a much better blower for making power but since you live in KY gets hot their in the summer and you have a STOCK engine you will need to keep the boost down to around 8lbs. At the low boost level it won't make much difference which one you use. What you buy should be based on future plans. If someday you will go with all forged parts then go for the D-1 if you stay stock either blower will make all the boost that you need. If you decide to sell at some future date the D-1 would be much easier to sell since it is what most people want.
Re: difference's between ATI's P600B and D-1? (black bart)
thanks  i also found out that the D-1 kit for 85-89 vettes does not come with the intercooler(but the 90-91 l98 kit does?), so that is a likely reason also. I've been told by several people to go with the 8 lbs. P600B but was just wandering why the better D-1 kit was a lot cheaper
Re: difference's between ATI's P600B and D-1? (corvettemaster)
There's a difference between the D1 (older style) and the D1SC (newer style self contained unit)...the transmission setups are different, the D1 is louder than the D1SC, and the the D1 requires you to punch a hole in your oil pan, the D1SC doesn't. If my choice was between the D1 -vs- P600B, I'd go bigger...I'd go with the D1. If If my choice was between the D1 -vs- D1SC, I'd go wih the self contained unit, I'd go D1SC.

The ATI intercooler is restrictive for a P600b so it is even more restrictive for a D-1 if you buy a D-1 you need a bigger intercooler but as long as you use stock pistons you have to keep the boost low so any of them will work ok. What are your future plans if you don't plan on ever building a motor for high boost then what you put on don't really matter. Theirs a lot of power freaks on this forum and they are looking for more and more power and sometimes we lose site of the fact that not everone is looking to make insane power. So like I said in my earlier post what you need depends on what your future plans are. :leaving:

well my future plans aren't much at the moment as it is my daily driver, but you know how that goes. today all i want is a supercharger, tomorrow i'll also want a superramed 383 and a bunch of other stuff  I'd just like to have a 12 sec car
Re: difference's between ATI's P600B and D-1? (Brand-X)
I know i'm going with the P600B, but I'm not going to do it for a bit longer. On that trip up the mountain last weekend, I realized that I could have more fun in my Stock LT1 than I'd ever had in my life... Which caused me pause in that I want to make the car better so that I'll have a better time, but I'd just had the best time ever... you guys see what I'm saying?
