I need some advice from the experts that always seem to make things seem easy.
I have a 96 LT-4 that was running perfect until wife took to store. It does not turn over or even click. All the normal things seem to be okay, tried resetting the alarm, battery has 12.4 volts on digital volt meter. I am wondering which way to start checking, the basics (starter, solenoid, other old car things) or do I need a scanner to check for codes. Any help will be welcome.
Thanks,
Alan
Most likely it is VATS preventing a crank. Here's how power gets to the start solenoid: battery through fusible link through the firewall connector through the start contacts on the ign sw through the start enable relay through the clutch safety sw (gear selector sw if automatic) back through the firewall connector to the start solenoid on the starter. First check for 12 v on both terminals of the clutch safety sw (gear selector sw if auto) when ign is on crank position. If you have 12 v, then starter is at fault , remove and have it tested. If no 12v, then find the 2 wires from the contacts in the tumbler that make with the pellet, unplug the connector and measure the ohms on the wires from the ign sw with the key in the ign, it should measure the same as the pellet. If over 13 k ohms, replace the tumbler. You can clip a fixed resistor the same value as the pellet onto the wires going to the passenger side (VATS module) and this will fool VATS until you can get the ign sw tumbler replaced. Don't pemanently bypass VATS because 99% of thefts are done by bashing the column and jumping the ignition.
That'll certainly do it to you. I had the same problem with a Camaro I used to have. Before I got it fixed, I went 2 weeks only parking on hills so I could get it rolling to start.
