Default Single mass flywheel

My son's '90 needs a new flywheel, and the stock dual mass is made of gold or platinum so he's considering a Centerforce steel single mass unit which we know will introduce some rattling noise. The question is, has anybody installed one and how much of a nuisance is the noise?

The noise is a substantial nuisance. The next time I redo my clutch I'm seriously considering going back to a dual mass. If my car was still a daily driver there would be no question about switching back.

I would highly recommend listening to a car with a single mass before going for it.

That being said it's not too horrible. It's mostly just irritating when you are feeling happy that you drive a Corvette, stop at a stopsign and watch people give you questioning looks because of that rock tumbler noise coming from your otherwise nice car.

The single mass flywheel will make more noise than a stock dual mass, but there are a couple things you can do to help. The stock clutch disc is a solid hub. If you put a sprung hub in it , it will help alot. Also, raising the idle to 850-900 also helps alot. The noise will be most noticable at idle, but if you push in the clutch while idling, the noise will go away. With a higher idle and a fairly loud exhaust... you probably won't hear it at all.

Thanks for the feedback; that's what we were looking for. At this point, we're going to try it since there's a $500 difference, so we'll see (or I guess hear) what happens.

I converted my 91, it does make more noise. When it's cold the noise is noticebly less ( thicker oil ), so I'm going to change my oil to the BMW ( Castrol ) 20/60. I think this will help also. Other than the noise I love it.

I find the noise irritating. It was less intrussive after some exhaust work. The rougher the idle the more the rattle. I have the hotcam so... Mine is not a daily driver, but I may consider going back to the dual mass.

:iagree:

Also read that if you change out the ZF Trans fluid to a different brand it will help the noise alittle.

In my opinion, the noise as never been an issue with my SMF set up. Going on four years now. How often do you have the clutch out in neutral?
