Default Any problems running engine with MAF and intake disconnected

I wanted to use a spray cleaner on the throttle body to try an clear up a rough idle. I removed the intake ducting with the MAF as a unit (and unplugged the dongle that plugs into the MAF) and did some cleaning with the engine off. I wanted to also spray into the bores while the engine was running so I briefly tried starting the car but it didn't seem to want to turn over so I stopped. I replugged the connector to the MAF and it started. Is this connection required for the engine to run?

mine won't run without the maf connected and air running through it.....I know I've had it come off when the supercharger tubing came apart while driving. :chevy

I don't know about LT1s, but on L98s when you unplug the MAF the car just uses a hardcoded table of values to run the car.

I agree with the posts above, I had experiences with both L98 and LT1 as long as the MAf is unplugged you can run the engine... the MAP senser will take over. If the maf is plugged in and not near the intake it will not draw air and the engine will either not start or run VERY bad!

i had a situation with an 85 that the Maf went bad... i unplugged the Maf and ran happily ever after until I got a new one... it will trip a code... When my Lt1 was supercharged I had a sililar instance where I blew the MAF off and the engine DIED. I have also run the LT1 MAf off and disconnected no problems

You can run your engine wiht the MAF unplugged, in fact this is how you test to see if they r bad. However it will run bad, and very very rich thus spraying cleaner in it while running like this may not be a great thing to do, and if you drive it like this you run the chances of burning up your cats provided they are still in place
