'88/Replaced O2 sensor, but......................
The "check engine" lite comes on after eng. temp. hits about 160 deg. ,but seems to go out after I've driven the car for awhile (15-20min around town), like it needs to get everything, inc. the sensor, hot enough to function properly. Other than that, my car runs great! Mileage is still good, starts great, runs great even after 170,000 miles. I also just replaced plugs, plug wires, cap, rotor, coil and module. I previously had a couple of bad plug wires causing a bad shutter under attempted acceleration. I parked the car as soon as that started happening and replace the igntion parts last weekend.
Any clues or recommendations on the O2 problem will be appreciated. I have an AutoXray scanner and GM service manuals. I've been reseaching allof the above, but no luck yet.
Thanks!!!!!
Check to see if the O2 sensor readings swing between say 300mV and 900mV; if not replace the O2 sensor. Since you don't list FL headers as a mod, you should be ok with a stock sensor.
You could clean the sensor connector with TV tuner cleaner and coat with a diaelectric grease.
If the O2 sensor is ok, check coolant temp as seen by the ECM; if it doesn't go above 150deg F replace it.
Since you already did the sensor I would be looking into it not heating up enough, or as mentioned the temp sensor for the ECM.
