Default Clutch noise when pressed to floor

I have a 96 lt4 w/ 6 speed around 70K miles. About 5K miles ago I noticed the clutch fluid very low, got the right fluid from chevy and added the required amount.

Now I notice that with the clutch pressed all the way in at start or when running a very loud grinding noise. Like something that is banging against something it soudn't.

Any ideas? and an estimate of cost to fix?
Thanks,
Chris

sounds like a throw out bearing and thats bad news the bearing is about ten dollars but you have to remove the transmission to replace it. and thats abouit $500.00 more............ :cry

If I am thinking correctly, your level shoud not drop with clutch and pressure plate wear. You must have a small leak. Usually noise when pedal depressed indicates a throwout bearing, but your description leads me more to think a clutch plate spring has broken. At any rate the transmission needs to be removed, probably will need to replace clutch and pressure plate, and a good idea to replace throwout bearing and pilot bushing and might want to have the flywheel surfaced if it needs it.... Good Luck...

I disagree. As the clutch wears the slave cylinder extends to take up the slack in the clutch fork (auto adjusting). As it extends it's volume increases so the fuild in the resovoir will lower and will need topping off.

When I replaced my clutch this spring I had to remove fluid from the resovoir. Actually I just drained and replaced the fluid but it was overfull when I got it together with a new clutch disk.

The problem is definitely inside the clutch housing, probably the release bearing or pressure plate. Only way to fix it is to pull the transmission. My guess is your clutch is worn so bad you won't be able to pull the forks back from the release bearing, which is a real PITA. Be prepared to remove the fork pivot (I think it's 12mm allen if I remember).

If you're still running the stock dual mass flywheel DON'T machine it! Check it per GM specs, deglaze it, then put it back together. Although there are stories of people resurfacing the DM flywheel GM does NOT recommend it.

Wow, what a lot of really good information. I am no mechanic - proved that to myeslf before and I have not done anything to this car except the usual check oil, fluids air cleaner stuff.

Thanks for the info ...
One other question with this, anyone got a favorite mechanic in Houston, TX?
I'm new here so any help is welcome.
