I have recently noticed that when I turn my key to the start position, there is a 1-2 second delay before the starter engages. It makes a single click, delay then starts fine. It seems to happen more when cold and I have tried both keys with the same results so I have ruled out the resistor pellet. Is this a sign of future problems? Thanks in advance for any help.
Re: 1-2 second delay before starter engages (Dilligas)
Have seen this many, many years back. The starter's armature would drag on the fields and cause a similar problem. Bad bearings/bushings were the usual suspects. If you had some test equipment, I would check the amps required to crank. Inductive clamps are best, but the little dial types (around $20) get in the ball park.
How old is the battery? Is there a place nearby where this can be checked. Not just the volts but with a load?
Re: 1-2 second delay before starter engages (PreferEuroRacing)
Lights do not dim, I just tried it and when I turned the key the first time nothing happened. I let off, turned it again and it started after a 1 second delay. I hope it is just the starter and nothing more serious.
Re: 1-2 second delay before starter engages (Dilligas)
Hey Kirby, Just talked with my son and this is not a common symtom. We agreed that it might be in the early stages of a dead spot in the starter. I just replaced my starter in my Jimmy for the "start-nothing, try again and it starts" symtom. We could put it up on the lift and pull the starter and bench test it, or just replace it. There is a series of test the manual recommends prior to pulling the starter. I'm sure your 94 is very similar to my 92 in the cranking system.
I thought you'd get more response on this.
Re: 1-2 second delay before starter engages (Strick)
Yeah, I just did a search and found that this seems to be a fairly common problem with LT-1 starters. Luckily it sounds like a pretty easy replacement if you have any way to get the car upon a lift (hint, hint). I will see if I can find a starter tomorrow, I don't feel comfortable taking the trip Saturday the way it is acting.
Re: 1-2 second delay before starter engages (Dilligas)
Just to give you a guide, my starter for the 93 Jimmy, new not reman, from AutoZone was $89. The LT1 starter is a gear reduction system and might be a little more. Of course we can use the lift. I want to drool over your Corsa's somemore. Let me find out which day my wife has to work between now and Sat. I'll know tomorrow.
Re: 1-2 second delay before starter engages (Strick)
No starter available locally, I ordered one from GM Parts Direct. They had the best price of anyone, I will just take my chances Saturday, bring a big rope. :D
