I have a 91 coupe with 51,000 miles. Lately, have noticed a significant vibration when in high gear and you attempt to crowd it a little bit. Don't mean stomping on it just crowding it as you would do when passing someone.
I had new plug wires and plugs put in today and it has not made any difference.
Re: Vibration/missing when you crowd it (Carroll Floyd)
It would be a very good idea to assure yourself that the drive shaft universal joints are OK. A worn U-joint will cause a vibration that is speed and torque dependant. Just slide under the car and check each U-joint for excess play. Do not f### around with marginal universals. If one is sloppy, change it now, before it becomes a disaster.

Carroll,
I strongly believe that all professional mechanics are idiots and/or thieves. It is possible for the converter to be the cause, but it is far more likely that the lock-up mechanism is bad, and just removing a wire would remove the problem (at a small cost to highway mileage). Then you could fix it at your leisure.
Or it something else entirely. The mechanic, who has a vested interest in diagnosing problems as expensive, has more information than I have. He could be right.
