Default voltage problems, what is it?

well my 85 has always had the esc code trigger when I drive on the expressway for a long time and recently I drove 60 miles and turned off the car, then I noticed the lights didn't work when I turned it off, I had no power at all on the car. I came back 3 hours later and it started right up, I have no idea what could cause this? I am going to check the battery ground cable and such but i don't understand how it could have no power right after I turned it off and then full power a few hours later. Also my voltage seems to fluctuate between 14.1 and 14.9 volts, it always ran at 14.4 before. Could this be a alternator problem? Thanks for any advice.

The voltage fluctuation is odd because the voltage regulator in the alterntor attempts to maintain constant output voltage but is overridden when it reaches its rated current output; but the output voltage goes from 14.7 cold to 13.7 hot. I think you have a poor battery cable connection. Remove the cables (neg first) and clean the cable lugs and the battery posts and replace the cables (neg last). Next no power situation, measure the battery terminal volts, you may have a bad intercell connector inside the battery.
