I have an 89 coupe. I have been chasing a leak on my auto trans since I have owned the car (about 2 years). It appears to be coming from the output seal at the back of the housing. I have review my shop manual and bought a seal from my local Chevy dealer (ac-delco). I believe I am ready to tackle this task. Any helpful hints would be greatly appreciated.
Hi, is that the seal at the tail end of the transmission where the propshaft yolk goes into ?
I`ve read that the bushing inside that tail end wears as well (mine has), causing leaks and sometimes vibration - it might be worth checking to see if you have much play at that point because the bushing doesn`t cost much.
You may have to take the tail end off which isn`t a big job if you are already removing parts of your exhaust and support beam and propshaft anyway to do the seal.
I can`t give you any advice on the job itself as I have yet to do mine - i`ve got the bushing and seal ready but don`t feel like braving the cold at the minute to do it. :nono:
If you much of any play in the sliding yoke to tail housing bushing area, change the bushing also. I first tried just the seal and the leak was as bad or worse. Since you will already have the driveline and most likely the
C-beam off, it's only 4 more bolts and the speed sensor and the tail housing will be in hand. Took my housing to a tranny shop and for 30 bucks they pushed in a new bushing and seal and included new o-rings for the housing seals.
It is a fairly easy thing to do,,,,,, I did it myself and I dont know anything about tranny's. GET a seal puller, dont try to use a screwdriver, they dont work.... The hardest part for me was to get the drive shaft out itself..... between the c-beam and the body. But I did.......
It is easy,,, do it yourself and be careful underthere
