Many people think just because we live in the state with the best cars, best weather and the best women but with the strictest smog laws, we're screwed when it comes to affordable performance parts on later model cars. We're not.
For headers, I just bought brand-new Headman long-tubes from the link below. I got them without the A.I.R. tubes for $172.00 shipping included. I plan on cutting the A.I.R. tubes off the stock exhaust and having them welded on the Hedman's after I get a good mechanical fit first (I don't have a welder). http://www.aftermarketperformanceparts.com/
After the job's done, I'm coating them with stainless steel exhaust paint from the Eastwood Company. Then installing the stock exhaust shields over the headers (modified of course). This will give me about a $150 savings over buying A.I.R. headers and with those shields installed it would look like the stock exhaust manifolds and it will still pass the sniffer. It would take an undercar inspection and someone knowing what a Vette looks like to uncover what I've done.
CA might have strict smog laws but most local gas stations can certify your car. In contrast to really bad places like New Jersey where every car must be inspected by state-operated facilities. Just rely on the ignorance of the foreigners working at CA's smog test facilities. If your conscious bothers you about that, remember your car is still running clean and doing no damage to the air. I've read some posts here from guys taking all their smog stuff off even if it still works. I guess they don't care about the quality of air they and their children have to breathe. I do. But putting one over on this states BS smog laws doesn't bother me a bit.
Sound good to me, but it seems like alot of work. I've looked on the net a seen that hedman makes a pair of headers (68447) i think, They have all the smog stuff but theres a note that says not for sale or use in Cali on pollution controlled cars. I was thinking that if they have all the smog stuff would'nt they still work. Maybe they put that note there so they're not responsible.
I don't understand the objection to long tube headers on an '84 or '85. If it's the law, then it's the law, and I'll shut up. 1986-1989 Corvettes have cats (or pre-cats) close to the exhaust manifolds, and I can see where eliminationg them could be a problem. But the 1984 and '85s, have a long "Y" pipe from the manifolds to the main (only) cat, located behind the transmission. It would seem to me that a set of headers, properly outfitted with all the smog connections, and plumbed back to the stock cat, should be legal. Hooker even makes a "Y" pipe for their systems. The Hooker "Y" pipe is a slip fit at the main cat, like the '86, up cars, but someone clever ought to be able to adapt that to the '84-'85 bolt on cat. Maybe??? Good luck, and...
