Ther are some sites on the web to give you the details, but the biggest difference is in the heads, intake and crank. They do have other things different. I guess you can say The LT4 is a better LT1. Same but different. Not to say that you could not improve an LT1 to out perform an LT4.

Most people will agree that GM under rated the LT4. Yes, the difference was 30 HP, but actually at the rear wheels. If you're going to keep it mostly stock then get the LT4 otherwise get the LT1 as it can be had much cheaper. Once you start modding the engine internally (heads, cam, etc.) they both have the same potential IMHO.

This is correct. The LT4 is about 340 - 350hp at the crank. GM underrated it due to the soon to be (for model yr 1997) released LS1 they had in the works @ 345hp. Didn't want the 'old' LT to upstage their next gen LS engine at the time. Or so the story goes.

What is different about the cranks? I thought they both used forged steel.

Mostly heads, intake, cam

You can get a low priced LT1, change the cam, port the heads and smoke an LT4.

Thats exaclty what it is cause some LT4's were dynoed with up to 370hp crank (source: CAC), and the new LS1 was only 345. Marketing wouldnt be all that good that way!
