Need help. I hear noise when clutch is not deppressed, the noise almost go away when I step on the clutch. Could it be a tranny problem? Any suggestion would help.
Max, I've had two ZF-6 vettes now, both 1990.......some whine without the clutch enabled is normal. The one I sold had some, the one I have now is almost completely quiet. As long as you don't get REALLY loud noise, or clacking, you'll most likely be perfectly fine  Now go out and ENJOY
I thought the throw out bearing would make the noise when the clutch is being pressed ( when it's going bad). Could it be the the input shaft or input shaft bearing?
No the bearing makes the noise as it sets and idles or before you engage the clutch. When you engage the clutch it puts pressure on it and it quiets down.
HAVE A GREAT DAY!!!

It may be the throw out bearing, but don't rule out failure of the dual mass flywheel.

May be your dual mass flywheel going bad. If it your tranny is working normally and is making a "rocks in a can" rattle from the gearbox area, that could be it. Check out the ZFDOC website, it has some info on the subject. [/B]
Bogus and Bradvette have your answer above. I've done alot of research into this noise (my '95 does it with low mileage). I discussed it at length with a techy at Rockland Standard Gear (ZF's official service folks in NA). Basically nothing to worry about, the ZF6 has almost straight cut lower gears to get the high torque rating. If you know anything about gears straight cut they equal noisy. The whine you hear in neutral, 1st, 2nd and a little in 3rd is normal for a ZF6. The early models (pre'94 I think) made a little more noise than the later years, and also have a higher torque rating. Have you ever heard a true racing transmission? Well they sound like your ZF6 just much louder (listen to the in-car camera audio from NASCAR at low speed or WRC).
People that don't own a ZF6 will swear it's the release bearing, but it's not, they all do it to some extent, some worse than others (due to model, oil, wear, temperature, alignment, etc.) Just turn your radio up and have fun!
BTW, the first thing to go on a ZF6 is the sychros. The techy at Rockland told me bearing failure in a ZF6 is extremely rare. Make sure your clutch is working properly to save your synchros.
it's not the throw out bearing ...it is the straight cut gears and is especially loud on the 89 models... i own a 89 vert and before i bought it i was very concerned about this whine that i heard...after long debates and discussions with many different people... the answer was the same ...."oh you have an zf...they are noisier than the later years" guess what 3 years later no problem still whines.. i wouldn't worry about it if it shifts smoothly and is quiet at highway speeds.... mine whines in neutral 1st and 2nd ...i myself think it sounds good...it grabs attention when your cruisin around slowly and ya hear the whine coming people want to know what is that ...just like a blower whine... :D
Mine does it also. If it goes away when you rest your foot slightly on the pedal it's the throwout bearing slightly touching the pressure plate causing a little chirp sound. As it wears, the play will automtically be taken up.No more chirping.
We are talking about this in another thread in the general section "Noise from Clutch." My LT4 has the same issue and its the input shaft bearing and/or the counter shaft bearing. Apparently its not the T/O bearing unless the noise is heard when the clutch pedal is pressed. In my car, when the pedal is pressed, the noise goes away. Only when the pedal is out do I hear noise. From what I understand, you don't need to attend to this issue until the noise gets so loud that you can't take it anymore. Just spoke to Larry Hofer at the Corvette Shop here in San Diego yesterday.
I have a 89 w/6speed also, i've heard if your motor has a slight miss like a bad injector or something the flywheel will rattle. Mine rattles like this when its warmed up. Still tring to figure it out. i'm thinking new injectors will smooth it all out! (I hope)
Mine made a weird noise today when I down shifted into 2nd gear. I was almost at work so when I got to work I had the radio turned off and with the car in neutral and the clutch out, it was making a noise almost like a clanking but definitely wasn't gear whine. As soon as I push the clutch in it is quiet. I am supposed to be leaving for an autocross down in NC tomorrow after work and I don't want to drive it if it is going to cause damage. My first thought is that it might be the throw out bearing, but I'm not sure what would have made it make the noise all of the sudden. Any ideas?
Got to love the people who automatically jump on the T/O bearing being bad, making the OP worry that he needs major trans service. Most likely this is NOT correct.
My 93 makes considerable noise when the clutch pedal is out and in N. When pressed, it goes away. Completely normal situation for the transmissions in the c4's.

Normal - you ought to hear the sounds mine makes with the single mass flywheel. Mine sounds like a rock polisher with all the clanking and whirring. It would be lots louder and more anoying with a lighter weight flywheel.
I have a lightened aluminum flywheel and a 6 puck clutch in there now. Not a fan of the clutch at all. I put about 1,500 miles on the car and 5th and 6th make noises, and then there is gear whine, but this noise is a new noise and i'm not sure why it just all of the sudden came around when I didn't do anything different or change anything.
